Another School Shooting And It’s Business As Usual In America
The business of protecting the second amendment at the expense of our children’s safety.
Another school shooting in America. This time at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas. Nineteen children and two teachers were killed as an 18-year-old gunman opened fire with two Military-style rifles he purchased on his birthday.
The first thing I heard someone say was, “how the heck is an eighteen-year-old allowed to buy a gun.” It is the age at which anyone can enter a store and buy a gun in the US!
Twenty-seven school shootings so far this year.
This is just one of 27 school shootings in the US this year. And according to the Gun Control Archive, a total of 150 mass shootings in the country. Pure insanity. Those of us not living in the US shake our heads in disbelief.
The answer appears simple — ban guns. But it is not that easy. Primarily because of the power wielded by US gun lobbyists. The most prominent of which is the NRA — The National Rifle Association. Founded in 1871, the NRA is the most powerful organization lobbying for gun owner rights in the US.
Firearms are big business.
Well-funded by the firearms industry in the US, the NRA has stood against government officials’ attempts at gun control. Firearms sales are big business in the US. Americans bought almost 20 million firearms last year.
42% of US households own at least one gun. The US is also a significant exporter of weapons. In 2020 the US sold over $175B in weapons to foreign governments.
It is culturally steeped in weaponry.
Statistics by Harvard University show a correlation between gun ownership and gun violence. This is reflected globally as well. 79% of all homicides in the US are gun-related compared to 4% in the UK.
But the right to bear arms is enshrined in US culture and protected by the government. It is something most of us would never be able to comprehend because the right to bear arms threatens our right to life.
So, where does it stop? And can it? While the world looks on in horror at these nineteen innocent lives violently snuffed out, it’s business as usual in America!
