WRITING — PHOTOGRAPHY

Andalusia is an Autonomous Community in Spain

Looking through my A photographs

Gruta de las Maravillas Photo by Stacey Mulcahy

Aracena

Aracena is a village famed for its amazing caves! We did a day trip — by bus — from Sevilla. It happened to be the weekend of the Cheese Festival. We love cheese. We came back to Sevilla with enough cheese to last us all month.

Alcazar Real

We visited the Alcazar Real (Royal Palace) in Sevilla after having some trouble getting in, but it was worth it. The gardens and palace were both stunningly beautiful.

Antequera

Antequera is another of the white hill towns of Andalucia but just outside Antequera is the Paraje Natural Torcal — the most amazing landscape I’ve ever seen.

Alhama de Granada

This village was built on the edge of a gorge and was off the beaten track. I only found it because it had hot springs (Arab baths but they were closed — that’s another story) I went on my first ever gorge hike on my own and fell in love with hiking. We stayed in an attic room overlooking the gorge — just heaven.

Almeria

We only drove through here but were amazed by the number of greenhouses as far as the eye could see. This area is known as the “fruit basket of Europe”. They grow 1.3 million tons of fruit and vegetables here every year — in greenhouses.

Not very clear pictures but there are tens of thousands of greenhouses in this area. Photo by author

Alhambra

And last, the most famous of all Andalusia — the Alhambra at Granada. Words are not enough to explain its beauty. The Nazrid Palaces, the Generalife, the gardens — I want to break into Spanish here — todos — I doubt the photos will capture its beauty. It’s something you have to experience.

I hope you enjoyed these photos of the places I went to in Andalusia on my last trip to Spain in December 2019. Thanks to JoAnn Ryan for this prompt.
