An Elliptical Orbit Through The Seasons

December Six Word Photo Story Challenge: “Snow & White”

White moon rises into Winter sunset.

A white moon is an astrological term for the lunar perigee (the point that the moon is closest to Earth). This white moon was photographed on 14th December 2021, ten days after the last lunar perigee, 18 days before the next one, and just 4 days before a lunar apogee (the point that the moon is furthest from Earth). It looks white to me, but I’m not an expert in astrological niceties, so my theory might be wrong, but I suspect it’s a factor of the eccentricities in astrological calculations. They haven’t kept up with the march of astronomy, sometimes, for example, basing things on a circular lunar orbit, so it’s no wonder that things get out of sync.

Another month, another moon story:

For good winter reading, look no further than these storytellers: Mary Chang Story Writer, Ellie Jacobson, Dunelair, Dennett, pockett dessert, Susan Alison, Kris Bedenian, Kim Zuch, kasey sparks, Divina Grey, Susan Foster, Jennifer Pierce, Stuart Aken, Linda Acaster, Vidya Sury, Collecting Smiles, Pene Hodge, Diana Lotti, Will Hull.
