An Efficient Process to Learn Faster

Photo by 🇸🇮 Janko Ferlič on Unsplash

“The more knowledge, expertise, and connections you have, the easier it is for you to make a profile at the game of your choice”.

Knowledge is everything, and developing your knowledge can open so many doors. We will see now how we can learn faster to acquire more knowledge in a reduced time.

Please note this process is for theoretical knowledge only. For practical knowledge, we’ll perhaps talk about it in a future article.

1. Find a field you’re interested in or you want to discover

The first step toward fast learning is choosing what you want to learn obviously. But this choice has to be meaningful for you. The key to motivation is doing what you love. By choosing something you’re interested in, the learning process will be x10 easier and take x10 less time.

2. Consume content

After you’ve chosen a field, you have to consume a lot of content relative to this field. But don’t be too ambitious, the more you will consume, the less you will retain information. That’s why you should go to step 3 below.

3. Take notes

Once you’ve chosen something you’re interested in and you’ve consumed content about it, a good way to retain information is to take notes. But note-taking is not an easy thing for everyone. I will give you some tips to facilitate your note-taking:

  • Make notes you understand. You don’t want to search for someone telling you what your notes should look like. Only you know how your mind works, so only you know how you can make meaningful notes.
  • Don’t write everything. Let’s apply Pareto’s rule to learning. 80% of the content you retain comes from 20% of what you read/listen to/watch. So imagine a 500 pages book. 80% of what you will retain is in 20% of the pages, so it corresponds to 100 pages. It’s not a lot compared to the whole book; so you don’t have to take a bunch of notes about every single page of this book, just keep the most important things.

I have some more tips for you, I will make an article about efficient note-taking soon.

4. Make connections

Once you have some notes, you don’t want to keep them separate. You want to link them together, and link them to what you already know. Let’s take an example.

If I’m learning how to become a good investor, and I have read two books about it, I can find a lot of connections between my notes. Some will contradict each other, some will match, and that’s where it gets interesting because you will discover different points of view. Also, you will find things that you already know so it will reinforce your knowledge. That’s why making connections is useful.

5. Revise

Now all that remains to be done is to revise, revise and revise. For this step, you can be creative because you have to find the revision method working best for you.

For example in my case, I found out that making flashcards and coupling them with spaced repetition is really efficient. If you know Anki, that’s exactly what it does and I use it a lot.

Final Note

You now know an efficient process to learn faster. Perhaps you may wonder how to implement it through an efficient workflow. So I will share my personal implementation of this process in another article, be sure to follow me if you don’t want to miss out on this article!
