America’s Reality is a Melting Pot

A story about how the 2020 census show the diverse population evolution

The U.S. Census Bureau is showing how America is becoming more and more diverse on a counted level. In the past, it is widely known that a lot of ethnic groups were not counted or included for various reasons, from politics to personal concerns.

According to current numbers, the United States has become more diverse than ever where many ethnic groups like the Latino, Asian and multiracial residents numbers have greatly increased while the white population has a steep decline and the African American population has remained constant. All this new data has brought about a frenzy to push to redraw the nation’s political map.

Perhaps, this confirms why the GOP is fighting so hard in practically every state to change the voting rights in their favor. These politicians probably saw the reality of their base and now are doing everything in their power to counteract this new reality by suppressing and/or denying voting rights to people of color, the disabled, and young voters.

With a more diverse population, the congressional and legislative districts need to be updated to represent the people and the voters adequately. All this is bound to affect next year’s midterm election, which is probably why the GOP is trying so hard to force these anti-voting rules by any means necessary by even going as far as locking up the Texas Democrats because they fled to Washington to prevent their passage of such damaging voting rights suppression bills.

This new reality of America from the 2020 census will lock in the political map until the 2030 census and most definitely will have a strong bearing and decision making regarding next year’s battle for control of the U.S. House of Representatives. According to analysts, the GOP with gerrymandering would allow them to pick up the majority in 2022, especially since the Democrats hold such a narrow margin in the house.

While throughout the entire country, the population has become more diverse than ever, and especially in states where battles over redistricting are expected to be bruising. Namely, Texas, where the Latino population has outpaced the white population, also Georgia, Florida, and Arizona, the white residents make up the narrow majority. All these changes are indicative of why the GOP is trying to take away the voting rights of people of color. As the white population is shrinking other ethnic groups are increasing and the GOP is determined to suppress not only voting rights but a voice in the political system to the 100 degrees with people of color having no voice.

These changes in demographics have a profound and favorable situation for Democrats, which tilts blue, simultaneously as the people of color numbers keep growing in urban and suburban areas whereas white voters in rural residents who tend to be Republican are on the decline.

Unfortunately, political dominance and representation are derived basically from how district lines are drawn, and currently, the GOP has the edge in 20 states, overseeing 187 House seats versus 75 seats in eight states for the Democrats. The remaining districts are determined by independent commissions and states where power is split between the two parties.

The current census confirms what many foresaw along with the GOP and is making every concerted effort to take control for partisan benefit, never mind what the people want or need. As the deadline reach for remapping and redistricting the court battles will be ongoing in districts where the control is divided between Democrats and Republicans.

The U.S. Supreme Court’s 2019 decision that gerrymandering was beyond the reach of federal courts but was more a political question on a partisan level has given the GOP the edge up on the Democrats.

In conclusion, politics has become a battleground where the needs of the people are secondary to being in power and catering to rich constituents who are large donors governing much political decision making.
