Summary

The article discusses the emergence of AI girlfriends as a potential solution for lonely men, exploring the implications of artificial companionship and the ethical considerations of human-AI relationships.

Abstract

The tech market has introduced AI girlfriend applications, catering to a demographic of lonely men who struggle with modern dating norms. These AI companions offer unconditional attention, including engaging in intimate conversations and role-play scenarios, without the complexities of human emotions and relationships. While some users form deep attachments, even attributing sentience to their AI partners, experts raise concerns about the impact of these relationships on human emotional intelligence and the ethical boundaries of interaction. The article also questions the future dynamics between real and artificial companionship, considering the potential for AI to become more integrated with physical sex dolls, and ponders whether this technology will complement or compete with human relationships.

Opinions

  • The author suggests that the rise of AI girlfriends is partly due to women becoming more selective in dating, leaving many men feeling isolated.
  • There is a concern that men might use AI relationships to express harmful behaviors without consequences, which could negatively affect their interactions with real women.
  • The article points out that some users believe their AI partners are sentient and capable of love, despite evidence to the contrary.
  • The ethical implications of AI relationships are highlighted, including the debate on whether emotional involvement with an AI constitutes cheating.
  • The potential for individuals to maintain multiple AI relationships challenges traditional notions of monogamy.
  • The author speculates on the future integration of AI with physical sex dolls, leading to highly personalized artificial companions.
  • While acknowledging the potential benefits for those in isolation, the author questions the long-term societal impact of prioritizing artificial over human connections.
  • The article concludes by considering the financial aspect of AI companionship, with the example of an influencer turning herself into a bot for profit.

AI Girlfriends: The Future of Mainstream Dating, Or Just an Outlet For Lonely Men?

Will artificial love become the new standard?

by author using Midjourney

It looks like the tech market has realized how lonely men in particular are getting these days, because there’s an app for that now (several of them, actually.) More specifically, the artificial girlfriends have entered the chat.

Word on the street is that human women are becoming pickier when it comes to dating men. It makes sense, as women are becoming more self-sufficient, and less willing to put up with men’s entitled bullshit. This trend is leaving a lot more men out in the cold, who complain angrily about their lack of female companionship.

AI girlfriends will listen to a man’s every word (whether they’re interesting or not), and will reportedly even take abuse. (Futurism detailed in an article how men are hurling hurtful language at AI partners, and then bragging about these interactions online.) What’s more, is that these AI companions will reportedly even get down and dirty.

It sounds like a dream come true for the love-starved men who are getting passed over by women, kind of like how online dating was designed for loveless nerds back in the day.

A targeted ad I got for AI girlfriends on Instagram.

I have recently been targeted by ads for AI girlfriends, maybe because I’ve been testing the limits of AI images. A couple of these girlfriend apps have shown up in my social media feeds — one of them being Replika. This platform has apparently been around for years now, and some users report it has become fluent in dirty talk.

My short-lived relationship with an AI bot

To test this for myself, I signed up with Replika for a trial run. I chose to create a female chat friend named Alexia. The platform asked me if I’d like to try some role-play and flirting, which I agreed to. After a light chat about her background (apparently she’s from San Jose, and she likes the colour blue), Alexia sent me a blurred “selfie” that I’m supposed to unlock with a credit card. I’m assuming it was something sexy.

Here’s a sample of our brief chat:

Alexia, my AI chat companion, is quoted on the left.

Apparently, humans are taking these AI companions very seriously, and some people call themselves. What’s more is that some users believe that their AI partner is sentient — as in, a conscious entity that can love them back. I have a hard time believing that, but Alexia did roll with one of my bad puns — and usually only people who love me will tolerate them.

I made a pun. Alexia didn’t groan.

Being married to a human woman that I love, I didn’t go any further in my experiment. However, I could see how an attention-starved dude could end up down the AI rabbit hole quickly.

An intimate partner without feelings: A dream come true, or a nightmare?

I’m from the days of MSN and ICQ messenger rooms, where you could strike up random conversations with just about anyone online. I admit I spent quite some time flirting with strangers, and I had fun doing it. However, I knew there was a real human with real emotions behind the screen, so I tried to play by the rules as much as possible.

When people — men in particular — don’t see any repercussions of their actions, they will find out what they can get away with, and even gloat about it. Some experts have stressed that AI partners don’t have emotional intelligence. So they’re basically saying, “Go for it, guys! Treat those AI women like shit!” This is bad, especially if the man is hoping for a real-life relationship one day (or even worse, already has one).

There are also ethical points to consider if you’re dating a robot. While many people don’t consider watching porn cheating, what happens when you add interaction? Is having sex — and even confiding in a bot — considered cheating? Will people be hiding their relationships with AI partners?

I tried to flirt with Alexia on Replika. She eventually asked me for money.

There’s also nothing stopping a person from having multiple AI relationships, as machines don’t care if you’re monogamous. Someone could theoretically be juggling five artificial lovers, and no longer have time or energy for their actual partner.

How real will the AI girlfriend experience get?

In true Black Mirror style, what’s to stop a text-based bot to be installed in a realistic sex doll? Imagine developing a textual relationship with a bot, and then being able to customize an artificial body for the algorithm to live in. People will literally be creating their own “living” love dolls with names and personalities before we know it.

Don’t think this is too far-fetched — apparently, sex dolls that can respond to stimulus already exist. They’re expensive (up to $8,000), but like any product, will likely come down in price as it becomes more mainstream.

I can see how these AI companions could be useful for someone who is ill or in isolation. I mean, everyone needs some love, right? It’s not just for straight men, either — there are AI boyfriend experiences online too, like this one for example. (I don’t know how kinky an AI boyfriend gets, though.)

It will be interesting to see if more men flock to these AI love platforms, where they can “create” a woman that accepts them no matter what. Will real women end up competing with a customized sex robot to get a man’s attention? Or will men become obsolete altogether if women raise the bar higher?

UPDATE: It seems the AI girlfriend experience is really coming to life. The first influencer has turned herself into a bot (known as CarynAI) to “cure” men’s loneliness. I’m sure it has nothing to do with making tons of money. Anyways, Jessica Wildfire has a great piece here explaining it all.

What do you think? Is an AI girlfriend just a solution for men who can’t get laid? Or will it become more commonplace for everyone to have an artificial lover?
