Advent Part 2: What Do YOU Want for Christmas? … How about ‘Peace on Earth
A little girl named Nan wrote to God … She was finding it hard
This little girl’s message to God seems to say it all … where is the peace? …
“Dear God, I bet it is very hard for you to love all of everybody in the whole world. There are only 4 people in our family, and I can never do it … Nan”
A more-expansive message from us adults … but the same message really, might be:
* * * * * * * * “ Where is the peace in this world of ours? ” * * * * * * * *
Little Nan seems to have given up hope!
But not Mickey. He wrote to God with this message:
“Dear God If you watch me in Church on Sunday, I will show you my new shoes: Mickey”
What faith! This little lad has a belief so simple it makes us smile when we hear it … we adults might even give him a reassuring pat on the head, yet we privately dismiss it, and we say (beneath our breath):
“He’ll grow out of it along with his belief in the tooth fairy etc”.
Yet even as adults, we are unable to dismiss the magic of Christmastime. And the month that leads up to Christmas is still referred to as Advent.
* * * Dictionary definition: ‘Advent: An important arrival … a coming’ * * *
We appear to have taken up this idea, this concept of a coming, but with a quite sophisticated approach to it all: We have retained the word … added commercial goods and goodies … and opened our wallets instead of our hearts.
Modern-day Advent has little to do with the welcoming of peace or the coming of The Prince of Peace and a lot to do with cash registers, credit card swipes, and taps.
* * * * * What do you want for Christmas? * * * * *
* * * * * * Is anybody interested in peace? * * * * *
