Fifteen-year-old Adaya Finley has her life planned down to the second in her bullet journal. Piano practice. A normal, uneventful Christmas with her mom. And the most important audition she’s ever had for the school orchestra. Then her dad’s mother passes away. Having no choice but to leave her plans in California to travel to Oregon for the funeral, she hopes maybe this will be a chance to deepen her relationship with her father.
But life doesn’t seem to care about Adaya’s plans. Her father is even more distant, and her extended family obviously don’t want her there. She runs into Grayson, an ex-friend she never wanted to see again. Worse than all that, Adaya’s attempts at solacing herself by learning about her late grandmother lead to her learning a family secret that makes her question who she is to her family.
Music isn’t as dangerous and confusing as feelings. Music can be there for her when people aren’t. Soon Adaya learns music isn’t everything, and neither is the reconciliation she hoped for. But maybe changing the key of her life is the best thing she could do, if she can let go of her plans long enough to improvise.
