Writer Trisha Dunbar

A top Medium writer of rambling words; descended from mudlarkers, Romani-Gypsies, West Indians, and maritime folk. A fan of pushing myself out of my comfort zone with 30 and #100daysof challenges!

Originally the founder of Language Learners Journal, an awarding-winning blog, I’ve now shut up shop on Word Press and moved across to the Medium community.

My Journey…

So, I totally sucked at learning at school!

Diagnosed with mild dyslexia and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) during my teens. Although, unbeknown to me what held me back at school would go on to be my greatest asset in adult life! More on that later, but…

The thing is even when I did do well at school because of the ‘label attached’ some of the teachers would accuse me of cheating! These teachers made me redo my work under close supervision — this was often during break times!

After almost a full term of micro-teaching, the school realized that the progress was coming directly from me. I went from being at the bottom of the class needing a little extra support to the top of the class supporting others!

So how did I go from struggling learner to making real progress almost overnight?

I started to take a more mindful approach to my learning and switched to a healthier diet. This included simple mindful practices to my daily study routine, less sugar and shit foods, more exercise, and developing positive thinking strategies.

My focus and attention span improved. As a result, I became a more disciplined learner that achieved set goals.

Now, I want to help inspire others to become more focused, motivated, self-disciplined, and successful at achieving their personal goals!

Today, I have an academic background in psychology, leadership, and history. Dyslexia and ADHD may have held me back at school, but in the world of work, it really is my superpower! It makes me highly innovative, creative, and a strategic thinker. Extremely persistent, focused with high energy, drive, incredibly self-disciplined, and motivated.

My mission is to help others to learn new skills and transform themselves! Whilst sharing my personal experiences and goals to inspire others to take action.

#100Daysof… Challenges

True change comes when you push yourself out of your comfort zone. I am a big fan of #100Daysof challenges. You will be surprised what you can achieve when you truly focus on something consistently.

“Greatness begins beyond your comfort zone.”

— Robin Sharma

My last #100daysofcode challenge saw me going from knowing no Python to building and programming a robot to dance! I am now working on a talking AI (artificial intelligence) robot called Dave.

Marty the walking, dancing and football playing robot!

Previous 100 Day Challenges: Learning Spanish, Mandarin Chinese, Dutch, and programming languages — Python (brushing up on my HTML, CSS, and JavaScript skills too) and planking.

Books & Publications

Books

Despite my mild dyslexia I always wanted to be a writer and had my first piece published in the anthology, Perfect: Young Women Talk of Body Image, edited by Helen Hines when I was just 17 years old.

I then went on to be a ghost-writer and write press releases for national and international media.

New Era Publication

“A ship in harbour is safe, but that is not what ships are built for.”

— John A. Shedd

I’ve just launched my very own publication on this platform! As we emerge from life after lockdown(s) this is a community to discuss what the New Era might look like.

Will we take the lessons we learned during the pandemic and apply them or go back to our old ways? Got a story to tell? Send me a draft. Happy to accept brand new writers with under 100 followers, as we all have to start somewhere!

What do I write about?

Ramblings of life from a neuro-diverse brain. Recently experimenting with short-form, which is an art in itself! Trying to express ideas within 150 words is no easy task.

My girl Rosie doing the downward dog!

I do cover a plethora of other topics too. I frequently write about all things digital, mental wellbeing, productivity, gaming, AI, and technology.

Follow me on my #100daysof… journey @DunbarTrisha (Twitter) — you may get to see more of Marty (and Dave)the Robots too!
