About Me — Shamar Mba

Thank you to Quy Ma for inviting me to share this piece of writing.
Do I have a degree in Master Business Administration? No. My surname is Mba. It’s Nigerian and I bet you £20 you cannot pronounce it correctly.
My colleagues think I should study an MBA so my name can be Shamar Mba MBA. This is a very funny idea, but I cannot be bothered to be a laughing stock and I most certainly cannot be bothered to study an MBA.
Many people call me “Sham”, “Sham Sham” and I even racked up the nickname “Shamalamadingdong” in my workplace.
I am 23 years old and live in the United Kingdom. I have a BSc in Psychology but halfway through realised that I’m at a dead end. My dreams of becoming a Clinical Psychologist were quickly crushed as I discovered you need a heap of clinical experience and a PhD. There’s not enough time in life for all that! In 2018 I graduated anyway and was also made redundant in 2018.
RIP Toys R Us. Did I get to go on all the fancy electronic cars? Yes, I did. Get first pick of the new toys? Yes, I did. Damn, I miss that place.
When I got my first full-time job, one of the major perks was free study. I decided to study a masters in Human Resource Management (HRM) and saved around £7,000 thanks to my job.
However, I accidentally dropped out of it the other day when my staff fee waiver was too late to be processed. Oh well, looks like I have to settle for a Postgraduate Diploma in HRM! Better than nothing. At least I have more time to write now.
Creativity is one of my major strong points. I have been into writing since the beginning of time. My mother still has all the cute poems, letters and short stories I wrote when I was a kid.
I am also really into colouring now as well. One of the book shops in my town is closing down so I managed to buy a load of colouring books for half price. ADULT colouring books, by the way.
Since March 2020, thanks to the pandemic, I decided to start writing again. So, here I am. I didn’t start of writing on Medium, I started on a different platform and my confidence built from there.
What do I hope to get from writing on Medium? I just want to be part of a writing community. Two weeks in and I’ve been fitting in well so far! I have also joined a string of Facebook communities to promote my writing and just in general meet new people who share the same passions as I do.
I guess I do want to make money from Medium too. The first couple of peices I read when I started my account here is “How I Make $5,000 a Month on Medium” and “I Made $2000 from One Article.” Something along those lines.
I had heard and read about many success stories and I have no idea why it can’t be me. Even if I just earn a steady £300-£500 a month I will be beyond overwhelmed, I’m more than prepared to but in the work. Grateful would not even describe the feeling.
In all honesty, I don’t really have that much to say. Just know that my writing does not really have a set niche to it. Look at all there is in the world. How would it be possible to talk about just one subject? Or maybe I’m just too opinionated.
Overall, I am just happy to be here and grateful that my Wi-Fi is working so I can write this article.
I am also taking this as a self-promo opportunity, similar to many others as I can see. Interact with my work? I’ll interact with yours!
