Hello!

I’m Rochelle Silva, a second-year PhD student at Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. I was born and bred in Sri Lanka, a beautiful country aptly called “The pearl of the Indian Ocean”.

I completed my undergraduate degree in Chemical and Process Engineering at the University of Moratuwa, Sri Lanka, with a first-class, a minor in entrepreneurship, and focusing on “Food and Biochemical Engineering”.

I’m dedicated to the work that I do. Because of this, I have been recognized at different organizations including being awarded as the most outstanding student at school in 2012 (Holy Cross College, Gampaha, Sri Lanka) and student organizations such as the Gavel Club and the Rotaract Club. Along the way, I have acquired skills in public speaking, writing, leadership, and teamwork.

Ambitions

Teaching has always been something I’m passionate about. Right after my school career, I started out as a substitute teacher at my school and even after my undergraduate career, I started teaching at the university — first as an instructor and then as a lecturer (on contract basis). Seeing the comments of my students saying that they enjoy my lectures and mentoring is a fulfilling experience.

Apart from progressing in my academic career, I’m passionate about working to bridge the gap between the academia the general public in the future. I think I can put my communication skills to good use in this particular field.

Research Life

I got the chance to be involved in research even before I came to the final year of my undergraduate career. During my third year, I was involved with a project related to the extraction, characterization and preservation of a gel from a local medicinal herb. During my final year at the university, I led a research project on “Textile dye decolourization and bioelectricity generation in a microbial fuel cell” along with two colleagues. I was fortunate enough to present this research at the “International Conference on Green Energy & Applications 2018” which was held in Singapore.

Currently, I’m following the “Interdisciplinary Graduate Programme” at the Nanyang Environment & Water Research Institute (NEWRI).

Hobbies and Interests

I call myself a logophile. I love words, no matter whether they are written, read or spoken. I share my love for words via blogging and being a Toastmaster at Nanyang Scholars Toastmasters Club. I am also passionate about emceeing and speaking at different events.

I call myself an artist. I’m not so good at it but it gives me a chance to relax and unwind. You can find some drawings I did via this link.

I call myself a wanderer. I enjoy going on random walks around the university and also exploring Singapore when I get the chance. I enjoy dabbling in different activities just for the fun of it — be it ballroom dancing, taekwondo (this had me in a cast for three months though 😂) or board games.
