About Me — Mira Lucas

Freelance journalist, aspiring digital nomad, killer of houseplants

Me, laughing awkwardly during a performance

Hello! I’m Mira Lucas.

I only just started writing (regularly) on Medium, so I thought it might be nice to introduce myself. :)

My bio

As my bio says, I’m a freelance journalist who likes cats, coffee, and social justice.

It actually still feels a bit weird for me to call myself a freelance journalist, as I haven’t been working as a full-time freelance journalist for that long.

I graduated from uni, where I studied psychology, seven years ago. I promptly realized that I didn’t want to be a psychologist and started studying journalism.

And ever since, I’ve been working part-time as a freelancer while also maintaining a day job (in those years, I worked in a bar, a restaurant, and two different bookstores).

However, because I love writing so much, I decided to quit my day job and become a full-time side hustler. So here I am.

It’s still very scary, but I’m also very excited. I quit my job when I didn’t really have any savings yet (or any steady income streams, for that matter), so I don’t know if I made the most responsible decision.

But so far, it seems to be working out for me. So I wake up every morning excited and happy and a little bit nervous, but eager to work.

I mostly write journalist stuff, but I also teach creative writing workshops and I get asked for readings or performances every now and then.

I also write for content mills sporadically (which I know isn’t very exciting, but it’s nice to have it as an option to fall back on, as I’m only just starting out).

This Summer, I’m planning on moving to Italy, to start living as a digital nomad.

Some random facts about myself

Here are some random facts about myself:

  • My favorite animal is a sloth because they always seem to be smiling (and they’re always calm, something that I also aspire to be).
  • I have unfounded hate for daddy long legs. I refuse to enter any room that has one in it.
  • I wrote my first novel when I was ten years old. It was twenty pages long, and it was about a girl who traveled back in time to the Middle Ages, where she fell in love. The object of her love reciprocated her feelings and proceeded to give her a rose (which was the end of the story — it wasn’t very good).
  • My zodiac sign is a Gemini, although I don’t really identify as an extroverted or nosy person (I am, however, very indecisive, which is also a character trait associated with Geminis).
  • I once won the first prize at a competition for blowing bubbles with chewing gum.
  • I also won two participation trophies at sports games, which isn’t something to be proud of (but I still have the medals displayed in my bedroom).
  • I’ve killed over twenty houseplants, which also isn’t something to be proud of.

My stories on Medium

I’m really excited about Medium! I love reading everyone’s stories, and I really like the direct feedback writing here gives me.

I wrote my first Medium story over a year ago (about Chuck Palahniuk, Tim Ferris, and the importance of making intentional mistakes). I published this story on February 26, 2021.

After that, I stopped writing for over a year (which proved to be very valuable, because I could spend this time reading stories and getting to know the platform better). I started writing again in March.

In this story, I reflect on my first four weeks on Medium.

And here are two of my own favorite stories I wrote last month:

I obviously still have a lot to learn when it comes to writing on Medium. In the coming months, I hope I’ll be able to share more of my experiences as a freelance writer/journalist/copywriter/professional side hustler (and, hopefully, as a digital nomad who’s living her best life in Italy).

And, of course, I’m also looking forward to reading more of everyone’s stories on Medium!

Thanks for reading. :)

I hope you enjoyed reading this. If you’d like to support me as a writer, consider signing up to become a Medium member. It’s just $5 a month and you get unlimited access to Medium.
