MEMOIR WRITING
About Me: An Introduction
What First Inspired Me to Write…
Thank you to @susimoore for this prompt in Meet Our Musers! (8).
Prompt: Write a stand-alone ‘about me’ story talking about the people, places, or events that first inspired you to become a writer.
When I picked up writing last month, I hadn’t written anything since college. But I always had stories roaming around in my head. My husband has been on Medium for around ten months now, and he suggested I try it out. He said that he always thought I was a writer, he could just sense it.
I first dipped my toe in the water at age six or so. My first story was about a group of aliens. They were all different species and they didn’t get along with each other. It was about friendship and unity. I even illustrated it. I looked back on it recently, and it is adorable.
My parents encouraged creativity in all forms. Music, art, and writing. And as a child I was allowed to read just about anything, everything from The Chronicles of Narnia to The Hobbit. More recently, I’ve had pretty eclectic tastes. I’ve read everything from Charles Bukowski to Roald Dahl’s adult stories, like Switch Bitch. And I mostly edit contemporary romance, so I end up reading a lot of that.
You’d think that writing would be a solitary activity. But in my house, it’s something we do together. I sit on the bed, while my husband sits at the kitchen table, just a few feet away. We pass our stories and poems back and forth between each other. We give input and suggestions. But it’s mostly about encouragement. It’s a really beautiful thing. And it’s so much fun to be doing something creative again.
But what truly inspires me? We are a culmination of life experiences, and I draw from that. I draw from my childhood trauma. My parents. My first crush and my first breakup. From my tumultuous twenties to my marriage today.
I’m writing every day now. I don’t have a niche, maybe I’ll develop one over time. But for now, I dabble in a little bit of everything.
Thank you for reading my story. I’d love to hear your opinions.
