A Week in Transition
Week of August 16–22, 2021
It’s been 1–1/2 years of distance learning for my two teenage sons. They did well considering the upheaval in their life and minimal physical interaction with their friends. They are gamers who chat with their friends through headsets instead of a corded phone, like in my day.
My oldest son will enter high school in one week. A milestone I can’t believe is here. My brain and heart seem to be on separate pages. I want to grab his hand and hold it like I did on his first day of kindergarten. But now with his long legs, he is able to walk many steps ahead of me and doesn’t look back. I’m proud and nervous for him.

On Monday, we visited his school so he could get his photo taken and walk around a little. It took everything inside me to not shed a tear as we made our way around the school. I will save that for the actual first day when no one is around.

On Tuesday I finished The Book of Accidents by Chuck Wendig. It’s a monster of a book and story. If you like creepy, dark, horror books, you must read this one. If that does not fit into your reading taste, then follow Chuck’s Instagram page for his most excellent nature photography.

On Wednesday, I decided a little road trip was in order! We headed to a slice of sugar heaven in Jordan, Minnesota, the home of Minnesota’s Largest Candy Story. They carry every candy you can imagine from the US and around the world.

But they are more than a candy store. They sell sodas from all over, jigsaw puzzles, local cheeses and meats, apples, and home-baked pies. I’m so glad we went during the week as it wasn’t too busy. In the past, we have gone on the weekend when it is wall-to-wall people.

“Let’s crush those writing goals!” Thursday and Friday were writing days, made better by sweet treats and my favorite soda.

On Saturday, I enjoyed time outside, cleaning and filling my bird feeders in the backyard. It felt like fall with lower temps and no humidity.

The summer has been brutal, with barely any rain. I’ve lived in Minnesota my whole life and never seen it this bad. We stopped watering our yard last month to let it go dormant.

This morning I woke up to this email. It’s my first Top Writer tag. I’m not a photographer at all, just someone who takes pictures every day with a cell phone. Thank you Dennett for your inspiration and the supportive community here at Snapshots.
