Summary

A man from a conservative family faces familial and societal pressures after his engagement falls apart due to old photos surfacing on social media, complicating his desire to marry a woman of his choice.

Abstract

The narrative revolves around a young man caught in a web of traditional expectations and personal desires. After completing his master's degree and securing a well-paying job, he is pressured by his conservative family to marry. Despite his feelings for a colleague, his family arranges an engagement in his absence to a woman from a family acquaintance. The engagement unravels when the fiancée, also unwilling, uses old photos of the man with his workplace crush to end the engagement, leading to a scandal that tarnishes his reputation. The man sees this as an opportunity to possibly marry his true love, but his family's disappointment looms large, leaving his future uncertain.

Opinions

  • The author suggests that the protagonist's family is overly controlling and conservative, as evidenced by their arranging an engagement without his consent and their reaction to the old photos.
  • The protagonist is depicted as conflicted between obeying his family's wishes and following his heart, highlighting the tension between personal autonomy and familial duty.
  • The family's decision to engage their son in a grand ceremony without his presence indicates a desire to uphold their social standing and adhere to societal expectations.
  • The fiancée's use of the photos to end the engagement implies she was also seeking a way out of an unwanted arrangement, suggesting a shared struggle against forced marriages.
  • The author seems to empathize with the protagonist, portraying him as a victim of circumstances beyond his control and questioning the fairness of the societal and familial pressures he faces.

A tragic saga that turned my friend into A man of Suspicious Character…

I am going to write about one of my very close friends whose life has recently been on a roller coaster ride. His story is so different or tragic that I always thought to write about it.

I would also like to have my reader’s opinion on his story, so if you are here, please read till the end so that you could also state your point of view on this whole situation.

First, He comes from a conservative family and is the youngest of 6 siblings. Hence, he was pampered but, at the same time, very much controlled by his parent and siblings. He came abroad for his higher studies while all his family is back there in his hometown. He is very obedient and abides by all of his elder’s wishes.

I’ll divide this story into three sub-stories to make it more readable.

PART 1

Let’s jump into the story now. This all started in 2019 when he finished his master’s and was doing a reputed and well-paid 9–5 job. His parents asked him to get married as it was high time for it. He was confused about it because he liked a girl from his workplace, but he also knew that his parents would never accept it as they both come from very different places.

He still thought about giving it a try on his next visit to his hometown. He went home, spoke about his liking, and faced the same reaction that he was expecting. It was a straight NO. As I mentioned earlier, he was very controlled by his elders so, he couldn’t fight for what he wanted.

Holidays were over; he came back to resume his work. Now that his parents were already aware of him liking someone they disapproved of, they were in hurry to get him engaged elsewhere. They were scared that he might marry the girl of his choice without telling them.

They got him engaged to the daughter of a close acquaintance in a grand ceremony that hosted nearly 150 people but in his absence(Yes, it was possible for them to get him engaged without his presence). All the close family and friends were invited, and now everyone knew it. The purpose behind doing everything so grand was to let everyone know that

He was taken as he was the most eligible bachelor in the town, and his parents were receiving many proposals for him every now and then.

This was in April 2019. Everyone was happy in both families. He agreed to the decision as he had no other option. He slowly started talking to that girl. After some days of conversation, it turned out that the girl to who he was engaged was liking someone else and was also forced into this engagement. Thus it looked like she was looking for some excuse to blame my friend and cancel the engagement.

She finally found some of his photos with the girl he liked on his Facebook.

Those were very old and random photos that proved nothing. But as I said, my friend’s family is a little conservative; these photos did the job. And the engagement was over by the end of September 2019. So it lasted for 6 months, and everything happened without his physical presence. He did not even see that girl face to face.

Conclusion:

In this story, only my friend was the culprit and got all the blame like he already did not want to marry this girl, that’s why he uploaded such photos on the internet.

He tried a lot to explain to his family that those were very old photos from long before this engagement was announced. And that the girl herself liked someone else, but nobody listened to him. His family was very upset with him. They said this incident has brought a bad name to their family and that now no one will give their daughter to my friend after this.

My friend was somewhat happy as he saw a ray of hope. Now that the parents are already saying that no one will marry their daughter to him, they might agree to get him married to the girl he liked.

But destiny has something else in store for him.

We will see what happens next in the story. You can find the next part here:
