A Summer Day Remembered
A poem for the heat filled, lazy months

Overnight New spray-grounds rise Growing from ice baked concrete Now sunned in splendorous beams A wall climbs skyward sporting faces Spitting water on unsuspecting visitors From red pursed lips Girls squeal, boys laugh, Parents smile on good-naturedly Water chortles, sloshes, burbles Tiny hands splash delightedly Crayon trees shade bared tow heads Giant pastel mushroom caps And rainbow pipe gateways Reflect in joyful eyes held wide Later eyelids dip Sleepy songs from crickets woke early Laps and arms are sought As adults murmur heat tired Holding onto small, stilled bodies All the energy of the earlier day Absorbed into the hardened ground Which has drawn the passionate cries Of children yet to learn The lesson of moderated inhibition Dampened bodies Dry slowing in the cooling air All ages leveled down To a common denominator Connected in fun’s aftermath The bliss of a summer day remembered
