A Sky of Friendship

GiaB writing prompt #6: the moon

I have a friend I treasure. We sit sometimes and talk for hours. It’s always been this way since we were born, although she is older than me.

She is compassionate. When I get low, she shines bright and lends her light to me. When darkness surrounds her, I lend my light to her. She’s a little bossy, and on occasion, she just takes what she needs. She’s my life-long friend, so it doesn’t bother me.

We have no problem letting each other sparkle. It’s so easy for us to share the stage. We take comfort in a settling truth. I can never be her and she can never be me. Neither of us can outshine the other; it just doesn’t work that way, and even if it did —

Even if it did, I’d wish on the stars for things to be the way they are now. They’d turn things around, I’d have faith.

You see I’m an introvert. I have a soft glisten and a calm energy. She likes to blind you with her beautiful, all bold. When she’s around you can feel how hot she is. I admire that about her — she’s confident. I smile when I see her.

And me? Well, I just mosey about in the dark. Sometimes I feel like I’m only a quarter of myself. She can always tell if I’m feeling a bit dimmer than usual — I don’t even have to say a word.

My friend, she leaves all the time, but she always comes back. I trust her, and that keeps me holding on, no matter how cloudy things get.

She trusts me too — we got it like that. I remember a time when she cried for six days straight. I’ll never forget how she beat herself up about some fires she said she caused. She blamed herself for death and destruction. She was so sorry — it was burning her up inside.

I told her that I didn’t think it was her fault, and even if somehow it was… that I forgive her. I gave her a hug, and she hugged me back. I stayed with her for the entire day — I couldn’t leave her side.

“What would I do without you?” she asked me.

Do? Without me? You’d explode, of course!” I laughed as I wiped a lone tear off her face.

When she woke up the next day, I went to sleep. You see, I was watching over her all night. With every moment that passed, I never tired — she needed me. I held her in my arms and relished in her light.

My friend makes me feel whole. Through all our wrongs, rights, and long nights, she is fiery and so full of life. I wrote a poem for her the other day. She’s such an inspiration.

I’ve heard the people call her “Sun.” I told her they have a saying about her too, “Fun in the Sun.” They aren’t lying. Go figure.

“What’s my saying?” I ask her, “Tune in the Moon? I don’t know, I like yours better.”

She says, “It’s not, we are both trendsetters.”
