A Simple Mindset Shift To See Your True Self-Worth

A quick recipe to detach yourself from the opinions of others

Photo by Johannes Plenio on Pexels

From a young age, many of us are taught to be responsive to the reactions of others and seek approval. These teachings are mostly disguised as skills to function in society, and often start as the following examples:

“Don’t do that, or your mother will get angry.”

“Share your toys with others, so that you will have friends.”

“Get good grades, and your parents, and teacher will be happy with you.”

This way, we learn these concepts as a form of trading where we seek the approval of others in order to feel safe. But for some of us, this can become less of a form of trading, and we can start to measure our value according to what other people think of us.

So as a result, this seemingly innocent conditioning of social values can result in our self-worth being tightly tied in a knot to the opinions of others.

This is a very difficult place to be since it leads you to start feeling worthy only by pleasing others. But even then, this sense of worth which is built upon momentary approval can only provide a fleeting sense of safety.

So to discover your true self-worth it is important to detach your sense of worth from the opinions of others.

This can be possible by realizing that other people cannot assign your worth, nor they can take it away from you. That’s why only through our allowance, do we get the illusion that they are able to do so.

So if we can break out of this cycle of approval hunting by reminding ourselves that it is never a permanent solution, then we can find, and feel our true sense of worth, and safety from this discovery.

Thank you for reading.
