PHOTO-A-DAY CHALLENGE
A Short Trip to Poland
Week 111 of the photographic documentary of my daily life
Things we do when told the airplane goes in for service. The plane is gone for two days? That means we can’t work. Without a plane, there’s no skydiving. But instead of being upset, my husband and I look at each asking “where to?”
Yes, we’re a bit different. And we love it. Always keen to explore new grounds and widen our horizons.
So, where to? Our previous trip took us to Sweden. That was epic. We’d love to do Denmark but somehow I brought up Poland and off we went. With the mattress in the back of the car, we were flexible and independent.
Hold on. My weekly photo documentaries start Thursdays. I spent some time in the trailer reading. We did work that day too but the picture I share with you is the view from our window.
We’re right at the beginning of the trailer park where everyone walks past. And to have some privacy we decided to let that bush grow. That much that nobody can see inside of our “bedroom”.
Friday…
It’s raining. The most productive kind of weather I can imagine. Simply because I have to work when the sun is shining. But now, the rain is dropping rhythmically onto the trailer roof.
Covered in a blanket I’m lying in bed listening to the sound of the rain while working through one hundred images.
Earlier today I was out with my camera. With a mission to shoot with a wide-open lens, I captured everything from mushrooms, fallen sunflowers, and dead birds.
And now, that I process the result of my walk through nature I created 5 different titles and that means five new photo essays for Medium. Not bad for a rainy and windy day, isn’t it?
Oh yeah, and just as I got back to the trailer Junie came by. The dropzone cat looked for attention. She often visits our trailer. Apparently, my husband sneaks her a slice of salami or two when I don’t look.
Not sure what her look was telling me. Maybe it is finally time I also give her a treat.
This is the cat who’s responsible for the controlled mouse population at the campsite. She hunts up to three mice a day. And eats them.
If she doesn’t get fed slices of salami by my husband…
Saturday was just as rainy and windy as Friday. We were kept on standby until midday before the day’s work got canceled. Great to have some time off but what do you do on such a stormy day?
More reading and writing.
Those flowers below are my new joy in life. I bought them last week and placed them outside next to the tomato plant and all the wildflowers we accept in the garden.
On Sunday we were fed up with waiting. Seeing the forecast it didn’t look like we were gonna jump (and therefore work either). We were basically just waiting for the go so we could jump in the car and head off to Poland.
At noon it was that time. As expected, the day’s work got canceled as well (which meant, theoretically we could have left already Thursday afternoon for an extended holiday but let’s not go there).
We drove off and only got out of the car once we reached Stettin (Szczecin in Polish). We did see more than just a rainbow in the city but it was my personal highlight. The rainbow was just so bright. And beautiful.
We then drove further North and stopped in a small coastal town for dinner. It was getting cold outside and I didn’t want to go back to the car to fetch my camera but took a few sunset shots with the phone instead.
On Monday we were in a holiday mood despite the rainy and windy weather. We visited a labyrinth, got all the hidden presents, and found the exit again. Then we visited a beach town or two and settled down at a campsite between the ocean and a lake.
My husband launched the drone which took the epic image below but the camera should not have been in the air at that time.
We misjudged the weather and the clouds moved in quicker than expected. Not just did it start to rain while the drone was still in the air but strong winds appeared out of nowhere.
My husband struggled for a moment to keep control over the flying object but finally managed to bring her down safely (not before I pressed the button two more times for taking an extra picture or two).
On Tuesday we were active hikers again. Not in the mountains and not in alpine terrain like two weeks prior but we found a protected national park with coastal forest and dunes on the ocean.
We hiked for over 3 hours through the woods and along the coastline. Of course, I took more than just a picture of a mushroom but there is so much more to say, show and share.
I’ll do that in a separate article.
Wednesday we had to be back at work. At 2 pm. And we had to drive 5 hours to get back home.
We had slept the night at some parking lot outside of a Polish seaside town. We arrived in the dark and so I didn’t hesitate to quickly walk down the road the next morning to see where we had wild camped.
A gorgeous beach was smiling at me in the morning sun.
And then we were in the car for the next few hours. But it was all worth it!
This has been my week in photographs. 7 days. 7 photographs. Anyone can join. Once. Or weekly. It doesn’t matter. We welcome everyone! Dennett started this photography challenge in 2020 and many have participated ever since.
