I Wear A Hat

It’s a thing with me. I take it off sometimes

When I was younger I didn’t use to wear a hat. I didn’t have a need to, at least I didn’t think so. I didn’t really care. I didn’t have anything to worry about. I had lots of hair and a long time to deal with it.

In high school, I ran track. My track coach said we didn’t have to win we just had to do better than we did last time. If you keep getting better you’re moving forward. I had my own goals. Most of the time I went forward not always.

I learned I didn’t have to impress anyone but myself. When I started martial arts my first instructor told me the same thing. You won’t be the best when you start but if you keep learning you’ll get better. We entered a few tournaments and being the political arena they are we didn’t always win. We did impress other competitors. It meant more to me that the winner of the tournament would come up and say “I don’t know how I wone. You should have beaten me. I guess the judges just didn’t see it that way. Thanks for the experience.”

One of the things I learned dying my 46 years of delivering produce is that when I have a hat on it will shield my eyes from the sun quickly. Sometimes if you’re driving the glares on the road can be hazardous. They can obscure your vision. I learned that just a slight download tilted my head can make all the difference. It’s a safety thing. It lets you see what you might have missed had you not.

I was grinding making knives in my shop. I had the experience of having one of the belts on the grinder break. If you’ve never had that happen it’s a scary feeling. Luckily I had on my hat. Nothing special just a little baseball cap. The brim of the hat protected my face and eyes from the flapping belt. I always wear a hat when I grind. For that matter, I always wear a hat. It has saved me more than once. I don’t care if others don’t like it. It’s just me.

The other day I was working outside with a friend. I forgot to wear my hat. He didn’t care one way or another. It was important that I stayed to help. I didn’t go get my hat and I paid for it the next day.

I don’t have as much hair as I used to and I got sunburned on the top of my head. My hat would have prevented this.

I knew I should have gotten my hat. I know it’s part of me. It’s who I am. I shouldn’t care when I have it on. It’s there for a reason.

I don’t usually wear it when I sleep. Sometimes my wife will ask me to take it off in a restaurant. I do it for her. Other than that she knows it’s who I am. It doesn’t matter to me. Take me or leave me. Luckily she takes me.

Once you learn what makes you comfortable you don’t try to impress others anymore. It’s not that you don’t care! You’re comfortable and that’s what matters.
