A Rebel’s Journey That Changed a Life Forever
Trusting your risky decisions and discovering opportunities in unexpected places
At the tender age of 10, I bounced around from place to place until my strict grandfather took me in. His word was law, but I occasionally challenged his decisions like any rebellious kid.
One day, I boldly ignored his rule against going to nightclubs, and little did I know it would change my life forever. In 2013, living in the village with my stern grandfather, he insisted on a straight-and-narrow life — no nightclubs, no mischief.
One fateful night, he slept soundly, and I seized the opportunity to sneak out to a nightclub with friends to celebrate the completion of our Ordinary-Level years. Amidst the excitement, I stumbled upon news of a scholarship. Brimming with enthusiasm, my friends eagerly shared details about this golden opportunity.
They guided me on where to pick up the scholarship application forms. First, I tried my school, where we excelled in the senior four final examinations. A cunning head teacher hid the forms, determined to keep us within his institution. Undeterred, I visited the district office, only to discover that they distributed scholarship application forms exclusively to family members and individuals with political connections.
Desperation led me to the village’s head office for the organization in charge of the scholarship, where a kind soul handed me the scholarship form. The catch? It had to be returned before midnight that very day. Panicking, I raced with my friend Joram, hastily completing the form. We thought, “Why not send it and see what happens?”
To my surprise, two months later, I received a call for an interview. Miraculously, I aced it, and that’s how I secured the scholarship that paved the way for my Advanced Level and University education.
This cringe-worthy experience taught me a valuable lesson — sometimes, going against the grain can lead you to unexpected opportunities. In the world of leadership, it’s like trusting your decisions, even when they seem a bit rebellious. Who knows, your scholarship moment might be waiting around the corner!
