Summary

The provided web content discusses the impact of plastic pollution on the environment, highlighted through a poem and reflections on World Environment Day, emphasizing the need to address the issue and the potential for nature to manage waste better than humans.

Abstract

The web content titled "A Rapscallion Stole a Script" features a poem "A Dizain on Plastic Pollution" that poetically addresses the environmental crisis caused by plastic waste. The poem, structured in the form of a dizain, uses vivid imagery to depict the consequences of plastic pollution, such as the Great Garbage Patch and its effects on marine life. It calls for action to mitigate the harm caused by human neglect and ignorance. The content also includes quotes from experts like Captain Charles J Moore and Sylvia Earle, underscoring the severity of the situation and the urgency to "Beat Plastic Pollution." The article references a prompt by Indubala Kachhawa for Paper Poetry and acknowledges contributions from various individuals, including Carolyn Hastings, Suntonu Bhadra, and William J Spirdione. It concludes with a call to readers to engage with a short film on environmental issues.

Opinions

  • The author views plastic as a double-edged sword: a modern innovation that has been misused to the point of becoming a pollutant.
  • There is a strong opinion that humans have mismanaged waste, particularly plastic, leading to severe environmental consequences.
  • The poem suggests that nature could handle waste more effectively if given the chance, implying a critique of current waste management practices.
  • The content suggests it is not too late to address plastic pollution, as echoed by oceanographer Sylvia Earle's quote, "It is the worst of times but it is the best of times because we still have a chance."
  • The author emphasizes the importance of community engagement and inspiration in tackling environmental issues, as indicated by the acknowledgments and the invitation to view a short film on the subject.

World Environment Day 5th June,2023

[Dizain: Is a French poetic form constructed with ten lines each with ten syllables written in iambic pentameter and an ababbccdcd rhyme scheme.]

My Corner: Though it’s late, it is never late to talk about pollution.

Plastic is by far the most effective of modern day innovations. From stacking some items ensuring longevity to sending spacecraft to neighbouring satellites, plastic is unavoidable. But its presence in its innocent form has been sullied greatly by ignorant us, turning it into a rapscallion, to our own peril. This poem aims at taking the handle away from human control and giving it back to nature and its elements, where it should belong. They will do a better job than we did thus far. The situation has been rightly summarised by one of first female oceanographers on plastic pollution Sylvia Earle ,“It is the worst of times but it is the best of times because we still have a chance.”

This is in response to Paper Poetry June Prompt floated by Indubala Kachhawa for this Environment day :Get-your-shoes-on Mention : Carolyn Hastings Suntonu Bhadra and Paper Poetry I decided to dwell on plastic this year, as the theme being #Beatplasticpollution.

Thank you William J Spirdione for the timely reminder :))

Thalia Dunn slipped on her writing shoes to join the challenge, which was an enjoyable read
