Summary

Susan Alison shares a personal photo journal documenting her experiences and observations from 26th April to 2nd May 2021, including architectural details, nature, and personal musings.

Abstract

In her weekly photo journal, Susan Alison captures the charm of her urban environment, from the intricate chimney of a building next to her doctor's surgery to the delicate blooming of wild strawberries. She reflects on the beauty of gravestones in an old cemetery and the progression of Ceanothus flowering at her local community centre compared to her own backyard. Alison also showcases her artistic side with drawings of a chicken excited about a cheese sandwich and a potential dog character for short stories. Her narrative includes a visit to Malvern, where she observes a unique, large bonsai-like plant, and a trip to a nursing home under a blue sky, where she tethers her dog to prevent him from jumping into a pond. The journal serves as a personal record to counter the fleeting nature of time, ensuring that each week's unique moments are captured and remembered.

A Photo a Day

26th April to 2nd May 2021

I love this building — it’s next door to the doctors’ surgery. It has a very handsome chimney. If the picture was clearer, you’d be able to see where it says on the left-hand pic that the date of it is 1877 AD.

Wild strawberries are flowering! I don’t eat any of the fruit on the ones found in the middle of a city, though, due to pollution. (I live in the middle of a city.)

There are some wonderful gravestones and carvings in the old part of the cemetery.

I went for a vaccination shot this week and took a photo of the queue, but then got cold feet about using it because, although it was only the backs of people in view, it was still other people. So I took a photo of the Ceanothus growing in the grounds of the community centre instead. Theirs is much further on than the one I’ve been watching like a hawk outside my back door.

However, now that the pictures are alongside each other, I’m thinking they are different models of Ceanothus so the community centre one must be an earlier-flowering type.

A friend who takes in chickens rescued from horrible environments mentioned that she might make them some cheese sandwiches. I’m not sure that was exactly what she meant, but it was too late — my pencil had gone with it. I don’t do commissions, but sometimes my pencil gets carried away.

The doggo is a possible character I worked up this week for some short stories.

I had to go to Malvern today (well-known for: Malvern Hills, Malvern Spring Water, the composer Edward Elgar) — it’s an hour and a half up the motorway. There was such a lot of traffic! Pandemic? What pandemic?

Took Doggo around the block before putting him in the car, and we spotted this plant above, in its massive ceramic pot. It looks like a bonsai — only it’s HUGE.

It’s a bit weird taking pics around here because wherever one takes pics is someone’s house. However, it was very early on a Sunday so I didn’t expect an outraged householder to come storming out and accost me about where I was pointing my camera, so I took the pic anyway.

I didn’t feel I should take a pic of the nursing home I was visiting so I took a pic of the house next door and the blue, blue sky above; and one of Doggo tethered to a table to stop him jumping in the pond. As you can see, it was a lovely day to visit someone outside.

It’s hard to know where the weeks go. No matter what I do I haven’t found a way of slowing time down. In the meantime, it’s nice to sort-of record them in here so I know for sure they happened and didn’t just speed by in an amorphous blur.
