Positive affirmation for the day — day 8 — Choosing our future

This is part of a daily series about positive affirmations and how they can benefit our lives.

Affirmation of the day:

“The past is the past, and my past doesn’t predict my future.”

Explanation

Part of the purpose of a daily affirmation is to make a fresh start and improve on the past, about using Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) to form new neural pathways to create the future we want.

I remember the head of an HR department of an organisation I worked for once telling me, when preparing to interview candidates, that the best predictor of future performance is past behaviour. There is a good case for this view. However we don’t have to be dictated to by our past if we are determined to break free of any negative baggage we carry around.

In the book “Awakening the Giant Within”, motivational speaker Tony Robbins talks of using memory of the pain of where we may have been and want to escape from, as a powerful motivator to push for the life we desire. It certainly worked for him, a former janitor who became a celebrity multi-millionaire!

So if we have a less than ideal past, this affirmation that the past does not dictate our future, can be a useful affirmation to remind ourselves that we can take the reins, we can seize the initiative, and make a fresh start. We have some agency and the power of choice.
