FUTURE|CHANGE|REINVENT

A New Name For Facebook -Are You Excited?

Rebranding the popular social media Facebook

Facebook is changing its name?

This afternoon I was invited to a lunch party. Do you know what transpired there? An excited group of people telling each other that Facebook is reinventing itself. Surprisingly, in India, our domestic staff is also hooked on Facebook.

Facebook has become a cult. Youngsters do not like Facebook as much as the older generation because they move on to newer apps like Instagram, Tic Tock, etc. Yet even young people have Facebook accounts, as they call a family app. People also have groups and workspaces on Facebook. The popularity of Facebook cannot be denied.

No one knows what Facebook is planning to do. It wants to rebrand itself. There are rumors that it plans to change its name. Some say that the name will not change but others things will change.

The Verge has reported that Facebook is planning to reinvent itself and already has employed more than 10000 people as employees to build an Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR)space.

Mark Zuckerberg, who co-founded Facebook in the year 2004, has a vision that the users of this platform will actually live inside the virtual platform. He believes that the key to Facebook’s future lies with the metaverse concept.

People are joking and sending messages to each other. They are also making memes. Some people have suggested that ‘The’ should be prefixed and the new name to be ‘The Facebook’

Originally the name was ‘TheFacebook’ but later it became Facebook without ‘ ‘The’ as its prefix.

The controversy going on is that the Facebook app and service may remain unchanged in their branding.

At the moment Facebook is positioned under a parent company that counts other brands like Instagram and WhatsApp in its portfolio. Google operates a similar type of structure with its Alphabet Inc. parent.

“In the coming years, I expect people will transition from seeing us primarily as a social media company to seeing us as a metaverse company,” Zuckerberg

The “metaverse” is a set of virtual spaces (that I explained earlier in my article adopting immersive learning tools) that will have a positive effect on education.

Creating a virtual space means where you can create and explore with other people not in the same physical space as you. you will be able to meet your friends, work, play, learn, shop, and create. It does not mean that you should spend more time online but make your online time more meaningful, special, and enjoyable.

The takeaways

I thought about the name change and the murmurs across people and I feel that though Facebook has a name and families love to participate and put their pictures in it, there is no harm in reinventing themselves for the following reasons:

  • Time to change: Facebook has had the same look for a long time and in the fast-changing dynamic world things keep on changing. Why not experiment with a new name or a new look?
  • Interactive: Social media apps should be interactive. If Facebook is making changes and experimenting we should welcome the change. Maybe it will be more enjoyable in the future.
  • AR and VR tools: AR and VR are immersive learning tools now being used in education for giving you a live experience in a virtual setup. You will be in space with Elon Musk or fly in a flying car.
  • Name change: Sometimes you have to change your basic characteristics to rebrand and reinvent yourself. If that is the purpose of Facebook there is no harm to fit the new look. Facebook may keep the same name and change its logo on the app or may even change its name. Facebook is looking into the future.

Conclusion

Let us give a chance to Facebook. Facebook is not the only company which has decided to change its name.

Guess what? In 2015, Google reorganized entirely under a holding company called Alphabet because it wanted to show to the world that it was not only a search engine It had other businesses like driverless cars and health tech.

We are also aware of the changes made by Snapchat that rebranded itself to Snap Inc. in 2016, it became a “camera company” with its first pair of Spectacles camera glasses.

Let me let you in a secret that Some name suggestions for Facebook are Horizon Worlds or Horizon Workrooms.

Before I end, I would like to recommend that change and experiment are good in our lives. I recently read an article by Yana Bostongirl where she describes that she did not like the rote way of learning things. Education too must keep on reinventing and changing to make it interesting. No wonder that Facebook wants to experiment and change too.
