Summary

Narcissists experience boredom intensely, leading them to engage in harmful behaviors, especially on social media, to seek validation and escape their dissatisfaction.

Abstract

The article discusses the profound impact of boredom on narcissistic individuals, who find it particularly unbearable even in a world filled with stimuli. Narcissists prioritize immediate pleasure and are prone to ignoring the consequences of their actions, which often results in hurtful behavior as they constantly seek new stimulation. The article references research by Ksinan and colleagues, indicating that narcissists frequently use smartphones and social media to present their ideal self-image and to cope with their inner insecurities and boredom. This behavior can lead to compulsive smartphone use and a tendency to cheat in relationships due to their short-lived interest in people and things. The article concludes by emphasizing the role of social media in reinforcing narcissistic tendencies and suggests that understanding narcissistic boredom can help identify such traits in individuals, allowing one to minimize interactions with them.

Opinions

  • Boredom is intolerable for narcissists, driving them to seek immediate gratification often at the expense of others.
  • Narcissists are likely to use social media as a tool to portray their preferred self-image and to gain external validation through likes and comments.
  • Vulnerable narcissists may misuse smartphones in an attempt to alleviate their negative emotions stemming from boredom.
  • The need for constant new experiences can cause narcissists to quickly lose interest in existing relationships, leading to a pattern of superficial connections and infidelity.
  • Understanding the concept of narcissistic boredom is crucial for recognizing narcissistic behaviors and potentially reducing exposure to such individuals.

Boredom may be unpleasant for us usually — but for narcissistic individuals, boredom is something unbearable. Even in this digital and modern era with stimulation from various sources, narcissists still end up feeling bored.

As narcissistic individuals are driven by personal benefit, they prefer to have pleasure first and think about the consequences of their actions later. They need constant stimulation around them that’s why they are easily bored with new things and new people in their life.

Social Media, Boredom, and Narcissism

According to Ksinan and his fellow authors, it seems that narcissists may use smartphones to access social media, where they can curate and present their most preferred self-image.

The findings from this study showed that getting bored is a common sign of vulnerable narcissistic individuals. This is why most of the time, they misuse their smartphones to fill the void inside of them and temporarily fix their negative emotions from boredom.

This type of narcissist will try to fill their insecurities by seeking external validation through social media likes and comments.

This broad spectrum of narcissists also explains why they end up cheating on their partners — because they are always looking for new shiny things and new people.

Thus, they easily and quickly get bored with their old acquaintances. This is also why they move from one new person to another as they are incapable of maintaining long-term relationships with one person.

Final Takeaways

Although boredom isn't the only thing that defines a narcissist's behaviour, it contributes to their behavioural traits and how they act for external validation.

It seems that social media is a driver of that preferred self-image, especially through the comments and likes there.

Thus, gaining insights into the concept of narcissistic boredom will help you to identify the traits of a narcissist around you. In due time, you can spend less time around such people.

As Mason Cooley once said:

“Narcissus weeps to find that his Image does not return his love.”
