A Month on Medium. I Broke Even. $5 Membership Cost, Still Exceed 0.09¢

After being a Content Consumer for a Decade.

Like many, I started writing on Medium on November 10th. (became a member on 11/15, earning as of 12/15 $5.09)

Here’s how I got started.

I remember I was so hyped up after watching Dan Koe videos for 25 days.

With over 10 years of watching YouTube and listing to podcast experience, (I’m sure everyone has a track record of theses) about a wide range of topic from self improvement, to business and economics, just name a few.

One day, I came home from work and told my wife that I decided that I want to write and monetize my writing. (Gave her an outline of what I’m going to do, mini speak and bla bla bla)

It wasn’t very convincing to her, yet she’s like go ahead do what you need to do. (Back of her mind: He’ll probably going to quit in a couple weeks as this sounds too fantasy to her and is still kind of is)

Once the green light is on

I immediately started googling on:

how to make money as a writer.

Where should I sell my writing.

And the whole 9 yards of question starts flow through my head.

I was desperate to look for answers, as if I was waiting for this day for so long. (an hour felt like a day)

During that week I wrote and post one article every day for 2 weeks.

2–3 hours of content roaming to drafting after midnight.

By the third week I start to read a bit more article on Medium, which end up engaging more than I write my own articles.

I was humbled by the different topic, writing styles and how I kept reading almost non-stops.

By the time I resume: Where I was just researching to learn what is trending, doing well as of claps and comments or why no one likes my articles yet.

Last week, I kept getting notification that the same comment were being clap again and again.

The most odd part of this journey so far is that I realize, there is something in writing that can spark appreciation of others. (I just need to be ready and have some more visibility)

Take for example a comment I wrote on November 25.

It actually have more people clap on this comment than any of my articles. In fact, I got most of my followers from commenting other articles with higher visibility. (if you like to grow follower on Medium that might be a good way to start and practice your ideas and writing by commenting)

From this exercise, I now value more on resonation with context and figure that storytelling is a large component for the reader to continue reading an article. Last note on commenting, it does not earn any money but it does help both the other reader and writer to understand what is resonating and how they feel after reading the article.

The next article was by far the worst performing one I have wrote. I felt I didn’t write like a human or even can be call a writing, it was just sentence after sentences.

The article below is here to remind myself to take my time to learn, improve and edit before posting. (my article can suck until everyone tells me that yet regardless I can still improve)

Action bring clarity as if writing brings that to a new level of the known.

Realize every reader on Medium could be a writer the next day.

Perhaps they have been writing but just not posting them.

If I can wish, to hope I can reach one person that takes couple seconds to start writing and share their stories, then the mission is accomplish for this article.

P.S.

On most platforms there is very few resource for new member to recharge their original intention of joining in the first place. (there are more common ground to realize if we start communication at will, there isn’t fix good or bad thoughts, it’s just your thoughts at the time you can recall in that state of mind)

As we are all focusing on our crafts, we often do not have time to look at all the post or articles that is helpful to this segment and fuel our interests that once had resonate us to start.
