A Message from a Future Politician: Reminders of What We Learned When We Were Young.
A local grassroots politician emailed her contributors and supporters this email. Not asking for more money or to share anything with others, but just to share this message and to spread some hope. Here is what she said, then what it reminded me
Today we honor the life and legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr. -- as we reflect upon all the progress he inspired, we also look ahead to the work that remains to truly achieve his vision.
The beautiful, singular legacy of Dr. King is of justice, equality, freedom, love, and service to others. I think a lot about this compelling quote of his: ‘Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, “What are you doing for others?”’
There is no greater way to honor Dr. King than by serving others, today and every day. We must help those who still face societal barriers. And we must strive to remove those barriers and create a more just society -- one of true racial, gender, and economic equality.
Dr. King understood that progress is achieved by individuals working together and becoming a movement greater than themselves. Only from community can we move past chaos and truly realize our shared humanity….
I thank Dr. King for his courage, conviction, and moral fortitude.
I thank you all for being on this journey with me to ensure Dr. King’s words become truth: ‘The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends towards justice.’ This is what we are doing for others!

How can We “Bend” the “Moral Universe” Towards “Justice”?
I am no authority on the matter. I am simply a mother, a teacher, a sister, a daughter, and a friend. This is how I imagine we can start to make small, yet, direct changes all around us with those we care about.
Spread some hope, some kindness, some unconditional love, and maybe we can create the change we want to see in this world we share.
You may be wondering, “gee, how do I spread hope, or ‘unconditional love’ any how?”
You spread hope by listening to others when they speak, so they can have hope of being understood, and feel valued. This is how we can show their feelings and beliefs matter to more than just them.
We need to try to see the ideas and perspectives of others, even if they differ from ours. This can give us a new perspective, or idea, or insight, we may not have known otherwise in our day to day, in our own lives. This gives the other person and ourselves some hope there are positives in our world. This gives people hope there isn’t just criticism, or people who will only shoot down our ideas, and ultimately our hopes all the time.
Everyone needs some encouragement and for someone to show they are listening and that they care.
Unconditional love may seem hard, but this too is simple to give. Like a small child, they hug you because they want to, they do things for you because it makes you and themselves happier. So, don’t be afraid to do the same.
Give without expecting to receive back. Show you care, not simply talk about it. Some people may call this, “paying it forward”, I call it unconditional love, showing that you care.
Give what you can when you can, it can be as simple as a smile, to anyone passing by, or helping a neighbor who you see struggling with something. Do not fear the other person’s ego might get bruised, the truth is, most people want help… They’re just afraid to ask.
The way of beginning these changes are small, but over time it can change all.
What do the words of Martin Luther Kind Jr. remind you of? Do they move you towards making that “bend” happen, towards justice?
