A Medium Secret You Need to Know…🔍Like Yesterday
The ONE WAY they can’t take it all away from you
I had this schedule to send out later in the week. But in light of recent events — the disappearance of a lot of my Medium friends — this comes at a very important time for us writers.
If you’re anything like me, you’ve dove head first💦 into reading and writing in the Mediumverse.
Also, if you’re like me, you had no idea that soon your friends accounts would start disappearing out of the blue. And you’d be left wondering, “Am I next?”
Imagine you wake up with a text from a dear friend, Ann Skip 🎀, with a warning you can’t ignore.
The text sent shivers down my spine.
I couldn’t concentrate until I talked to Ann on the phone.
Even then, I’ve been wandering around the house trying to do what I need to do, but I can’t stop thinking about my friends. What will happen to them? Will I get to see them again? Engage with them, joke with them?
So, I decided to stop and warn other Mediumites.
It’s time to take control of your content.
You know, the stuff you sweat blood creating and the stuff you can’t imagine someone would just take away from you overnight?
Yeah, that stuff.
The secret you need to know is that it’s time to —
Download the zip file of all your articles
I recently learned that Medium has an easy way for us to back up the articles we publish.
Here’s how:
Desktop
- Go to the Settings menu by clicking on your profile.
- Click → Security and apps → Download your information
Mobile
- Go to the Settings menu by clicking on your profile.
- Click → Account → Scroll over to Security and apps → Download your information
Next, Medium will e-mail you a link to a zipped file with all of your “stuff,” including your all important articles.
Take Note *You only have 24 hours to download the zip file.
Even though I knew about this option for a little while, I hadn’t taken the time to do it myself.
Until today.
The crazy thing is, I only write in Medium Drafts. I don’t even use Google or Word for my first drafts. So if I disappear from Medium, all of my hard work does too.
Oviously, I’ve learned a second lesson and that’s to start my drafts elsewhere were I am in control of them.
But for now, I feel safe, I’ve got all my articles safely waiting for me in a pretty little zipped drive on my laptop.
