A Man With a Hammer Trailed by Officers Was Shot & Killed

How LAPD Officers Followed Samuel Ponce Who Threw a Hammer at the Them and Was Killed

Protect and serve who? March 19, 2021, Samuel Ponce was trailed down the streets for a few blocks and then shot to death when he threw a hammer at the cops. How harmful could this man be being followed? How was he a threat to the cops following him? While following, why didn’t the cops think of methods of deescalating the situation versus shooting to kill? Does human life matter to these cops? Are cops trained to kill people of color automatically at all cost to fulfill some hidden agenda? Several cops and not one thought for a moment to save this man’s life. Why shoot at all, there were several cops, none in danger? Here, we had one man against several cops from a distance. After the shooting, the officers talked about the man being mentally ill or intoxicated. So does this possible fact, validate shooting him to death?

According to the video, the supervisor of these cops was heard yelling telling these officers to tell Ponce in Spanish to drop his weapon, to shoot him with a projectile, a Taser, aim better and shoot him again as Ponce continued his stride down the street. The officers claimed he looked as though he was begging God for help. If this is true, then why not help the man? Killing should not have been an option, perhaps some mental professional assistance.

How many innocent lives need to be taken before society wakes up to the reality of these ramrod shoot first officers? Pertaining to Ponce’s death, there exists a multitude of questions that demands answers. Until these cops stop taking innocent lives, they need to loose their life behind bars for murder, a life for a life. All police departments, city officials, local activists and the community need to come together with plans to prevent such atrocities in the people of color community, especially when there is not a threat to the officers’ lives.

Police ill behavior needs to be called on the carpet. The civilian Police Commission is in the midst of addressing police usage of lethal force on suspects wielding a knife, hammer, iPhone, anything other than a gun as been excessive force. Also, Los Angeles launched pilot programs to assist the mentally ill in similar situation as Mr. Ponce with mental health experts and other medical providers. While this is a step in a positive direction, but it is not the mental ill that is the problem, the root of the problem lies within the police department. Also, who gets called first, the police or mental health experts? A child could answer that question.

Officers are trained to de-escalate even with armed suspects, very little of this is obvious. It is quite the reverse. There are options before using a gun, e.g. tasers or foam projectiles. The video showed that the officers kept their distance, so why shoot the man?

According to the video, an officer asked his supervisor if they should try to take Ponce into custody, and the supervisor warned against that, so the police fired projectiles at Ponce who kept walking and his action caused much anxiety. Sadly, on the video Mr. Ponce was heard saying in Spanish, “Heavenly father, help me.” As the police finally decided to approach Mr. Ponce, he threw the hammer at them from a close distance. Did it hit them? It was when he lifted a second object that one of the officers fired a taser as another police shot him with a handgun. Why was both necessary? Aren’t they on the same deescalating team? Why shoot to kill when a life is not in danger? Afterwards, a hammer and a rear-mounted bicycle kickstand was found near the scene.

Ponce’s shooting is under investigation with an internal LAPD review before it goes before the Police Commission, to vote on whether the tactics and the shooting was with LAPD policy. Will the police vote against their own, especially with the recent killings at the hands of the police across the country? Let’s keep it real.

In conclusion, a neutral party investigation needs to happen to get to the truth of all these merciless shootings within communities of color. All these shootings are not new, but video cameras are bringing more to the light. Can you imagine how many people have been innocently murdered and are sleeping in their graves from the hands of many rambo quick triggered cops? The police department from the top level to the bottom level and beyond need more training and restructuring. Get rid of the bad apple cops and the world can breathe better without them in their neighborhoods.
