Care to hear about my ridiculous 27-hour commute?

Each year, I travel to Ipoh, Malaysia to see family. It includes a mind-boggling commute time of close to 27 hours. I kid you not.

If you’re thinking of travelling to Ipoh and you live in Toronto, here’s a breakdown of how your trip might unfold.

Home to Toronto Pearson Airport (3 hours and 45 minutes)

I’m counting the time from when you leave your door.

The actual drive takes about 45 minutes, but don’t forget that you have to arrive at the airport 3 hours before your flight.

I’m not even sure how the pandemic has affected this. Chances are, you might have to arrive even earlier than that.

The trip already started as soon as you left your front door 3 hours ago.

Toronto Pearson Airport to Hong Kong or Taiwan (15 hours)

My choice of connection is usually from Hong Kong or Taiwan. If I’m lucky enough to have some extra time to play with, I’ll even stopover for a day or two!

Once you hop onto that plane, your flight from Toronto to Hong Kong/Taiwan is roughly 15 hours.

Now we are building up the time!

It’s been just under 19 hours of travel time already!

Hong Kong or Taiwan to Kuala Lumpur (5 hours)

Now that we have reached Hong Kong or Taiwan, we can fly to Kuala Lumpur.

Let’s allocate roughly 5 hours here.

Lovely! It’s been almost 24 hours since we left Toronto! If you got some shuteye on the plane, you’re a lucky duck!

Kuala Lumpur to Ipoh (2.5 hours)

Feel tired? Don’t worry! We are at the last leg! I assure you that the roti canai is worth all of this!

Alright, once we’ve reached Kuala Lumpur, we need to get to our final destination.

We have a choice of train or taxi.

The duration depends on things like traffic or how fast you drive. But the time frame for both train or taxi is about 2.5 hours.

And there we have it! Our total travel time is about 27 hours. All in all, it’s just under 30 hours to get from Toronto to Ipoh.

Oh, and if there are any flight changes or delays, then we’re done.

With our black eyebags swinging along, we can now audition for The Walking Dead as new cast members.
