Most people head to Kuala Lumpur when they visit Malaysia, which is a great choice. But don’t forget about the other hidden gems in Malaysia.

In 2016, Lonely Planet featured Ipoh as one of the top 10 destinations in Asia. No other city in Malaysia has been featured in the book before.¹

Ipoh is a haven for delicious food. Every time I visit Ipoh, I come back looking a little rounder! So, you like bar-hopping? I like restaurant hopping!

So, let’s talk about food in Ipoh! Yes, I’m rubbing my hands in glee. My mouth is already starting to water.

Ipoh White Coffee

Yea, the coffee isn’t white. It’s called white coffee because it’s a literal translation from its Chinese name.

The coffee is roasted slowly at a low temperature with margarine, so the brew comes out a lighter colour.

If you enjoy coffee, you will fall in love with white coffee! Try the hot and cold versions!

Ramly Burgers

Check out this popular street food, which takes burgers to another level. It consists of an omelette-wrapped meat patty on a bun. It can get messy to eat, but it’s LEGIT!

Don’t just go for any old burger, get a Ramly burger instead!

Rojak

Get your veggies and fruit in with a delicious salad! Ingredients may vary but usually consists of cucumber, cuttlefish and fried tofu.

It’s topped off with roasted peanuts, sesame seeds and a rojak sauce.

If you don’t eat spicy food, you might want to pass on this one.

Bean Sprout Chicken

How does this work? Are the bean sprouts inside the chicken? Or are they mixed in one dish?

It’s simply delicious chicken, accompanied by a side of fat and juicy bean sprouts.

Bean sprouts are famous in Ipoh for being one of a kind.

Ipoh is surrounded by limestone hills and mountains, resulting in high-quality mineral water.

The mineral water helps produce the crunchy bean sprouts, like none other in the world.

Paired with the delicious soy sauce from Ipoh, this is an unbeatable dish. If you visit Ipoh, make sure to try it out.

Noodles Galore!

Wonton Mee, Hakka Mee, Curry, Silver Needle, Yee Mee — take your pick! There are many different types of noodles!

I can’t even name them all! If you like, you can even mix two different types of noodles. Enjoy the noodles as a dry dish mixed with a sauce or choose a noodle soup.

I enjoy dry noodle dishes a bit more, but both are delicious!

Dim Sum

We can’t forget dim sum. Yummy! Get those shrimp dumplings and char siew buns! The dishes in Ipoh typically offer smaller portions.

Perfect! That means I can eat even more!

Cendol

Don’t worry, I won’t forget dessert! Try this iced dessert, made with green rice flour jelly, coconut milk and palm sugar syrup.

The green colour of the noodles come from the pandan leaf.

Enjoy the crunchy ice or the chewy noodles. Either way, an order of Cendol can help you cool down from the heat!

Tau Fu Fah

More dessert, you say? Of course! Check out tofu custards! A very smooth dessert, made with a clear sweet syrup and ginger or pandan.

There’s even a cool place where you can get your tau fu fah drive-through style!
