Keeping out of harm’s way

A bird on a fence, quietly I notice her respite, hoping she doesn’t fly away, despite my proximity

She sits across a boundary to prevent a misadventure, and offers wisdom in the silence of her waning tune

Looks so regal up there, as if fences were made for ravens to have a better vantage point, see the movement on the ground, receive secrets from the sun,

to hear the dove’s gentle coo, feel the easterly breeze between her feathers, the sound that waves make when they crash upon the rocks at morning’s high tide

yet, the bird is not without fear, she is a cautious observer, keen to stay out of harm’s way, a voyeur with sharp glances, mindful of a stealthy predator —

a sudden stir, a conspicuous presence that might cause ill will — she will forgo her comfortable spot, and ascend to a heavenly height where a light mist will buffer her fall.
