Summary

The article "A" Is For Apple … Part Two: The Age Of Computers & Artificial Intelligence discusses the evolution of the apple symbol from its biblical origins to its modern representation in the era of computers and AI.

Abstract

The narrative begins with a reflection on the biblical Garden of Eden, where the apple represented knowledge and temptation, leading to "The Blame Game" between Adam, Eve, and the serpent. The author then transitions to contemporary times, illustrating how the apple has become a metaphor for the knowledge and innovation brought by computers and artificial intelligence. This transition is exemplified by a cartoon from Jon Kudelka, which humorously captures the intersection of technology and human nature. The article also references a limerick by Lori Brown, adding a playful dimension to the discourse on the apple's symbolism. The author, Fred, invites readers to consider the implications of AI in our modern "blame game," suggesting that even robots might one day partake in this age-old practice.

Opinions

  • The author views the apple from the Garden of Eden as a symbol of knowledge and temptation, which has been reinterpreted in the context of modern technology.
  • Fred implies that the human tendency to assign blame, as seen in the biblical story, may extend into the age of AI, potentially involving robots.
  • The article suggests that the advent of AI and computers is a significant milestone in human history, akin to the biblical acquisition of knowledge.
  • By including a cartoon and a limerick, the author indicates a lighthearted yet insightful approach to understanding the impact of AI on society.
  • The author, Fred, appreciates the contributions of other writers and artists, such as Lori Brown and Jon Kudelka, in exploring the theme of the apple in relation to human progress and folly.

“A” Is For Apple … Part Two: The Age Of Computers & Artificial Intelligence

Part One focussed on ‘Legends of Old’ … Part Two is for ‘Today’

In “A” Is For Apple … Part One I developed my story around the biblical Garden of Eden and Eve’s tempting of Adam to eat the fruit of The Tree of Knowledge (often interpreted as an apple tree), after she had been persuaded to eat one herself by the serpent:

The image above, (borrowed from fellow Medium writer Lori Brown) is a fine illustration of the idea that I put forward an earlier story of mine, when I referred to this ‘apple act’ as an example of The Blame Game.

The Original Temptation and The Blame Game: In Gen 3:(1–6) we read how Eve was told by a serpent (snake) that it was OK to eat the fruit, and she ate one, and then persuaded Adam to eat one too.

When God realises that Adam had eaten the fruit, he said to him:

“Did you eat the fruit that I told you not to eat?” Adam replied: “The woman you put here with me gave me the fruit”. God then asked Eve “why?”, and she answered God by saying: “The snake tricked me into eating it !” … THE BLAME GAME:(Gen 3:8–13)

Before I transport the temptation story into today’s age of Computers and Artificial Intelligence, let me tell you a little more about Lori’s Apple story. It’s a poem … a limerick … about ‘Adam’s Eggplant’. It’s cute (if a little risqué in parts), a limerick that ends something like this:

No-body speaks of the detail all of us blame the first female But what if the fruit had been something less cute? Like…eggplant. Who’d notice this detail?

Thank you Lori.

And now for today’s Part Two of my “A” Is for Apple story. I choose to leave the past behind by transporting the apple story from Creation Times to today’s world of Computers, Algorithms and Artificial intelligence.

Although I say ‘today’s’ world, this modern ‘take’ on the apple story first came about (for me) in 2017 when Artificial Intelligence started to feature in news bulletins and the TV stories, with ‘the new science’ and the expectations for the future (often represented as being ‘ready and upon us’ now!) were aired.

At that time, the scientists of the day were already promoting their inventions and their personal ‘predictions’ for the ‘almost ready’ and the near future, and one Australian cartoonist … Jon Kudelka … was quick off the mark with a cartoon in The Weekend Australian’s review magazine of August 5/6th 2017.

When I saw the cartoon, it triggered my imagination immediately and I cut it out, to re-present in a future article. That future is now; and that article is this one: “A” Is for Apple … Part Two. And here is that cartoon:
