A Haunted Legend from India— “Nale Ba”
Don’t read if you have a weak heart or if you are a child

This Urban Legend — “Nale Ba” belongs to the 1990s. This legend was originated in the Maleshawaram village of Banglore that is situated in Karnataka. Karnataka is a south-Indian state and Banglore is its capital. And, Maleshawaram is a popular village there. There lived hundreds of people with their families. Everything was going on fine there but suddenly something happened that was not imagined by anyone.
There was a family living there in a small house. It was a dark night. Everybody was to go to their bed. Suddenly, one of the members heard the voice from outside. He recognized that it was the voice of one of their relatives. So, he rushed towards the door to open it and let them come in. He slowly opened the door. And, saw that it was not his relative. It was an ugly woman who knocked on the door in his relative’s voice. Before he could ask that lady anything, she attacked him, not only attacked but put him to death sleep.
The next day, this horrifying incident spread to nearby areas, police came there to report the case and start the investigation. Initially, villagers and policemen did not take it much seriously. They thought that it was a criminal case not a paranormal case. The Police Team started to search for the person who killed the man that night as they usually do in all such types of cases. But, this case was supernatural.
The next day was again not a good day for the village. A similar incident again happened the following night. One more person left his life. He too heard the voice of his relative from outside and he opened the door and an ugly woman appeared. She attacked his body with her nail and took him to death.
The next day, again the Police Team came to report and investigate the matter. This time too they didn't take it as a paranormal incident. Villagers were confused and also in deep sorrow because of the painful incident that occurred that night.
One more day set in the west with the Sun and the blanket of darkness approached the village to cover its sky. Villagers prayed to Lord for the safety and well-being of their loved ones. They wished that nobody die in the upcoming nights. But, it was not accepted by the Lord. Again, the village saw a funeral of a dead. The body was burnt on a bed of wood as per the Hindu Teachings.
After the continuous deaths in the village, villagers held the meeting and discussed the matter. They came to the point that it was not a serial killer or an ordinary human who was doing that. It was a supernatural being. Because an ordinary man could not speak in multiple voices and that’s too similar to their friends and family members. So, it was concluded in the meeting that it was a witch(a supernatural lady) who was killing innocents to increase her supernatural powers.
In the meeting, everybody was told not to leave their houses after the sunset. And, also not to roam on the roads in the night time. They were also told not to answer if they heard the voice of their relative from outside.
The same happened the next night, the village became like a silent funeral ground after the sunset. This news now spread to nearby villages of Rameshwaram and then to the whole capital city. The terror of the witch took away the peace of the peaceful village. After the sunset, Rameshwaram looked like an abandoned area.
The incident did not stop. However, deaths had been reduced. But, the witch had not left the villagers. She knocked on 5 to 10 doors daily to find her prey. Whoever answered the voice and open the door could not see the next day. And, if somebody did not answer, she kept on calling and calling that made the family members shivering. After knocking a long, she left the door and knocked on another door.
One day, the same witch knocked on the door of a housewife. He knocked and called her in the voice of her husband. But, her husband was sleeping just next to her. She left her bed to see who was calling. She was shivering. She didn’t have the courage to open the door. She looked outside from the window and she saw that there was no one outside. Then, she returned to her bed. But, the voice again came. She understood that it was a witch. She was perplexed. She didn’t have an idea to tackle the witch. So, in a scared voice, she said, “Nale Ba”. Nale Ba is a word of Kannad language that means “Come Tomorrow”. When she said Nale Ba, the voice stopped coming. She thought that the witch has left her house. So, she went to sleep.
The next day, this incident spread to the whole village. Everybody got a magical word — Nale Ba that can protect them from the witch. Now, whenever the witch came and called to open the door, villagers used to say Nale Ba. Whoever said Nale Ba, the witch left their house. Even villagers started to write down Nale Ba on their doors. And, that worked. Witch stopped knocking on the door that has Nale Ba written on it.
But, everybody had not the same fate as that housewife. A man whose name was Nagesh was resting in his house during the nighttime. Suddenly, he felt that his mother was calling him at the door. He was excited to meet her mother. He went to the door and opened it without thinking anything. And, he saw that it was not his mother. It was an ugly woman or the same witch. She laughed at Nagesh and attacked him and killed him in a single jab. And, he left the world that day. This left his beloved ones in sorrow.
However, Nale Ba Idea worked and it saved the lives of many in the village. The Nale Ba incident became such a popular incident that now Nale Ba day is celebrated in Rameshwaram on April 1 every year. And, a Bollywood film — Stree(Woman) was too produced recently on this incident. This was reported by International Media as well.
