A half-hour before I set out for my board exams, I began feeling nauseous.

I became fearful of missing the exam.

Mom was at work. Dad was home that day.

We didn’t have nausea medication at home, and the pharmacies were closed.

Suddenly, Dad remembered his mother’s remedy. He grated gingerroot, then added salt and lemon.

He said, “Rub the mixture against your tongue and let the juice run into your mouth.”

I did that five or six times. Ten minutes later, I was ready for my boards.

Years later, my daughter had severe nausea post-surgery. She wasn’t allowed medication. I asked the nurse if I could get ginger, lemon, salt, and a grater.

Within fifteen minutes, my daughter’s nausea began wearing off.

“I need the recipe for this herbal remedy,” the nurse said.

“Sure,” I replied,

Grandma would be happy to pass on her remedy.
