A Garden Visit for Dennett # 1

Aussie Spring Flowers at their Best

Up early for a trip to Melbourne’s largest and finest garden. As you can see, the weather as we leave the house at dawn is hopeful but not exactly encouraging.

Our destination this morning is the Dandenong Ranges Botanic Garden, which features important collections of rhododendrons (15,000), azaleas (12,000), camellias (3,000) and lots more, in a mountainous setting of native and exotic trees. This stunning cool-climate garden is brilliantly landscaped to take advantage of breathtaking views over the Yarra River Valley in the distance.

Looking northeasterly to the river valley with just the tip of the Sylvan Reservoir seen behind the trees.
The gardens contain several miles of paved walking track. Although they are mostly fairly steep and hilly, at the entrance there are several long stretches of level ground that God designed for us oldies.
Yours Truly standing among Azaleas just coming into bloom with a Rhododendron towering overhead,
Just one of several dozen banks of Azaleas now in full bloom.
Let the trumpet sound!
Although the garden has many non-flowering trees and shrubs, there are always at least a few flowers in sight.
Every color of the rainbow is represented.
More coming!

If the weather holds up, in the next day or two I hope to post more albums of this visit to the many flower gardens in Olinda, Victoria, Australia.

While you are waiting for those posts, may I suggest you have a look at my favourite album of other Olinda gardens published two years ago in Weeds and Wildflowers.

For those readers who enjoy photos of gardens, here is an album of our garden at home which Dennett posted about a year ago.

Anyone interested in gardens, may also be interested in an essay on Nature that I published in Weeds and Wildflowers a couple of years ago.
