Original Poem
A Desperate Effort

October pregnant Heavy on bent tree limbs Weighed down and tired out From the month of summer and September
Memories bubble skyward like a soul departing A final breath exhaled and Giving in to the chill And letting go of hopes for just one more day of warmth
The water shivers and crashes no longer playful It hides it’s dangers underneath With waves thrust up To spray all those who dare To want too close a look
Though never fragile in summer months It beguiled, enticed, beckoned softly Now there is no subtlety in its roar It grabs, it fights, it shakes, explodes Demeanor chilled subzero falls
There is no longer water lines Of low or high No gradual creeping uniformity Only chaosed movement Of madness throwing down Rage barely disguised in crazed deceit
The colors are darkened A further means of subterfuge All shadows in browns and deepened greens The spray of white does nothing To soften it’s appearance Instead erupting with such force That insulated dreams fall tentative
The laden branches look on Envying the waters energy Even if overwhelmed with anger The churning whirls Will keep it active that much longer Before the cold slows it’s writhing Beneath the hardened ice Solidifying it in form
And they the branches will fall prey To leaves dropped dear to freeze asleep Until new day and gentled breath Awakens them to look upon A tranquil friend companion now Born anew into the dawn
