In Memoriam of my Oma and Opa (German Grandmother and Grandfather)

Twas long ago since both of you have passed Tears shed, time lost, as our clock ticked its last

It was boxed up tightly and stored away Saved till my heart was ready to play

I discovered it today with joy and delight One battery change is needed to make it alright

I paused to reflect the message in its face Thinking back years in a story to retrace

Almost three decades in a global power struggle Terrified to visit home or get trapped in worse trouble

In the West, you could express your colors In the East, family, freedom, and fear shudders

An epic challenge extended to “Tear Down This Wall” Destruction at the ready to mark its final fall

Rebuilding unity redrew the country whole I remember joys streaming endlessly from your soul

I now hear the restarted ticking of the second hand The movement cycles generations needing to understand

Its rhythmic beat soothes my memories, fresh in my heart and mind For you, Oma and Opa, your profound lives are epiphanies intertwined
