The Covid Pandemic Has Improved The Mental Health In 9 Ways
Plethora Of Hidden Reasons
Currently, the world is going through a crisis where the finishing line doesn’t seem in the sight so far. The pandemic had devastating effects on the life and livelihood of the people so far.
One of the major crises created by the pandemic is the issue of mental health. Contrary to popular opinion, I believe that the COVID pandemic has improved the mental health of some people. This is because of a few reasons that I have listed below.
1# Time
A lot of people saved time that was used earlier in many activities like commuting to work, attending social events, etc. As a result, many learned and developed new creative hobbies, i.e. music, visual arts, writing, etc.
These creative hobbies have a profound positive effect on the human brain. I have already explained them in one of my previous articles.
So, these artistic activities pursued in leisure time further promote stress relaxation.
2# Choices
One of the benefits of the pandemic is that it limited the choices we used to make earlier in day-to-day life. For example, I used to commute to work before the COVID. Sometimes, I used to spend time deciding the route to my office. Also, I used to attend various artistic events earlier. However, I spent time selecting the events among a pool of many events.
With COVID in play, most of the options in life are limited now. As a result, I have very few options to make a choice. So, decision-making is very easy and less time-consuming now.
3# Global Picture
The current pandemic has brought the spotlight to mental health on a global scale. People are more aware of the issues plaguing mental health now.
Several research studies are made recently that have highlighted different techniques to solve mental health problems. A simple google search will show the rise of research publications, blogs, and online articles concerning mental health.
As a result, a lot of remedies are now available to keep mental health in check.
4# Worst Fears Realized
One of the biggest advantages of a disaster is that the survivors develop enormous courage. This is because they have witnessed the worst in their life. They have suffered a lot. All these bestow them with valuable experience to deal with adversity.
In the end, the mental resilience of the people rise after a period of turmoil. Some people lost their parents, loved ones, and jobs. These losses are quite difficult for anyone to digest. But, many of them have learned to embrace the difficult times and still continue living.
People know how to deal with these and come up with mitigation measures. The key lies in having a strong emotional quotient so as to get less affected by the unfortunate incidents. And next step lies in recuperating from it by making an effort.
5# Introverts
I noticed a strange sense of relaxation in one of my friends in the pandemic. Being an introvert, he often refused to hang out with friends and attend events. As a result, many people made fun of him for not having a good social life.
On the last day of the last year, he told me that due to the pandemic there were no events, hangouts, activities. So, he didn't get any invitations and no comments too. It was quite comforting for him. So, he could spend a lot of time learning new courses in programming and indoor exercises at his own pace.
6# Meetings
In the pre-COVID era, I remember bumping between different meeting rooms on a busy day. Now, most of the meetings happening online, there is zero hassle due to migration within meeting halls.
Also, it saves time because we don’t have to wait for other people to arrive in the meeting room. Everyone is readily available at the start of the meeting. As a result, the meetings have become quite effective in terms of value drawn from them.
7# Exposure To Nature
This is one of the greatest benefits the ongoing pandemic had on the human mind. People realized the essence of strolling outdoor in mother nature. It has one of the best comforting effects on our minds. Just looking at the green color, a sense of calmness develops in us.
Some people also developed creative hobbies amidst nature, like writing articles, poems, and photography. I wrote a poem while sitting on a bench in a forest near my place last year.
In short, nature showed its power in healing the human mind during the COVID era!
8# Wealth Enhancement
This pandemic has been a surprising one, especially with respect to the stock market, i.e. S&P 500 in the US. I am mentioning S&P 500 because its an indicator of the performance of the 500 leading companies in the US.
At the very onset of the pandemic, the S &P 500 dipped drastically, brewing fear and pecuniary losses.
But look today, the S&P 500 has risen around 40% (around 4500)from the highs of the Pre-COVID era (around 3337).

All the people who invested in the stocks in the S&P 500 index have benefited from it. So, the overall wealth of people has increased. And this puts smiles on their face.
9# Spending Curbed
Ever since the covid lockdowns started, people spending on outdoor activities like restaurants, traveling, outdoor sports, etc. decreased significantly. As a result, they saved a lot of money.
This surplus of wealth is beneficial for future endeavors. Also, it makes people cheerful.
