8 tips I wish I had when I joined Medium

How to enjoy the benefits of the Medium Community

Medium is my Muse, Image by Author

I am celebrating 1-month on Medium and it’s been a steep learning curve. I’m now a Medium Partner with 500 followers, have written 27 stories, am writing for 15 publications, and I have made about $15.

You can do the same with a few helpful tips.

1) If you already write on your mobile device, download the Medium app.

Prior to joining Medium, I wrote in my notes app on my iPhone. I was able to easily copy and paste my stories and ideas from the notes app to the drafts in Medium to have a quick way to work on my writing from anywhere. The app does have a few limitations when it comes time to publishing your stories — but as a whole, it is easy to navigate and format your writing as well as easily read stories and get data on your stats.

2) Publish your first story, something that will help others understand who you are and why you are here. (wait to publish your very best story, I’ll tell you why further down)

My first story was inspired by a community panel I joined to honor the National Day of Racial Healing. I only had two questions to answer for the panel and so much more to share. So I wrote my story. After editing my draft a few times I hit publish and share it on my LinkedIn and Twitter networks. Check it out if you are interested.

Another popular initial story people publish is About Me, I decided to write a twist on About Me inspired by a writing challenge from JoAnn Ryan owner of the publication In Living Color. ( a must-follow pub if you love photojournalism). Publishing helps folks who may want to connect have a better understanding of who you are — and gives them a great reason to follow you.

3) Build Community by finding your people.

When I started writing on Medium, I wanted to find a place to share my writing. I had no idea what an amazing community of like-minded folks is here. Find writers and publications you like by searching topics you are interested in and following them. Follow their followers. You want to interact with a diverse range of writers and readers to get the most out of the Medium community.

4) Connect your other social media communities to your Medium page.

If you have Twitter and Facebook, get them connected. You can post your Medium articles on Linked In. If you include your referral link in your articles, you can also get paid for bringing new subscribers to Medium. If you aren’t sure how to do this, check out this article by Dr Mehmet Yildiz, the founder and Chief Editor for ILLUMINATION, one of the largest active and diverse publications on Medium.

5) Join the Medium Partner Program so you can earn money from your stories

If you have 100 followers and have published one story, you are eligible to become a Medium partner. When you are just starting out as a Medium Partner, your articles may not earn very much — but if you keep posting and grow your readership through authentic engagement, you will continue to earn money and get connected with folks from all over who will enjoy your writing.

If you have already published several stories prior to joining the partner program, be sure to go back and meter those stories to make them eligible for payouts. Check out this article by Grace for ways to easily reach the 100 followers goal.

6) Once you become a partner, become a writer for publications that are publishing your favorite stories.

Search “submission guidelines” within the publication of your choice to learn how to apply and let them know you are interested in becoming a writer with them. This will give you access to a larger audience of readers and offers support from amazing editorial teams. I have joined many publications ranging in size from large to just starting out. Some publications offer writing prompts and challenges to get your creative muses moving. Promptly Written is a fun publication by Ravyne Hawke here are the submission guidelines.

7) Add a short paragraph in the footer of your stories.

Include a Buy me a coffee, your referral link, and a short bio to encourage folks to follow you and continue to connect with you beyond your story. You can even include your links to other stories. Inu Etc shares the benefits of Buy Me a Coffee below.

8) Reciprocate engagement with your fellow writers.

It can feel pretty lonely behind this screen sometimes. I try to read a minimum of 2 stories each day, clap and leave a comment on the stories I enjoy. I also joined a Facebook group for Medium Writers and post my stories there. If someone follows me, I return the favor.

My hope is that you have found some helpful tips that will support you as you navigate Medium, there’s so much to learn and enjoy. Always remember what brought you to Medium and why you write to begin with.

Thank you for your support ❤
