7 Ways To Be A Good Traveller
Don’t be that rude traveller everyone hates

A few weeks ago, I wrote a story about how to be an annoying tourist. Of course, it’s a joke! Nobody likes a rude tourist.
Let’s talk about how to be a good traveller instead.
1️⃣ Learn Some Local Language
It’s always nice to say simple phrases to locals! It’s a great icebreaker and they are often happy you took the time to learn their language.
It doesn’t take long to google a few commonly used phrases. Learning something new is always good too! Here are a few Mandarin phrases for you!
- How much money? = Duo Shao Qian?
- I’m sorry = Dui Bu Qi
- Thank you = Xie Xie
2️⃣ Research A Little On Your Destination
Do a little research on culture and avoid making mistakes. For example, you may need to cover up if you enter a religious building. It’s not a great experience to offend locals.
Another common thing to check is tipping. Do you need to tip?
3️⃣ Quiet!
Be quiet! There’s nothing like a loud group of tourists disturbing the peace. Try to keep your voice down at all times. You might even see some “be quiet” signs in public places!
4️⃣ Obey Local Signs
In some countries, you’re not allowed to eat on the subway trains. Make sure not to whip out your ham sandwich!
5️⃣ What About Photos?
If you’re not sure if you can take photos or videos, ask someone politely.
6️⃣ Don’t Be A Litterbug
Some countries don’t have many trash cans in public. In this case, carry your trash with you until you can dispose of it properly. Littering anywhere is not welcome!
7️⃣ Animals Deserve Respect Too!
Don’t just be polite to humans. I know it can be exciting to see a wild deer, but it’s not nice to go running after them for a photo for your Insta. Keep your distance and admire their beauty quietly.

Travelling is a wonderful way to meet new people. Be a good traveller and see where it takes you!
Did I miss anything? Let me know.
- What do you think makes a good traveller?
- What can we do to create a wonderful experience for everyone?
