7 Sins of Terrible Job Candidate
Avoid them to get a well-paid job.
There are millions of people searching for a job. Still, there are even more open job vacancies. And their amount is growing.
Current unemployment rate in the U.S. is 6.7% with 10.7 million people looking for jobs. (US Bureau of Labor Statistics, November 2020)

So what's wrong with the market?
Nothing. The market is a generalized expression of the situation created by specific people. So, we have to ask a question people looking for a job.
What the candidates are doing wrong?
7 sins that keep people looking for a job unable to find it.
#1 All the Will of God
This is the sin of 90% of candidates. They sincerely believe — all the will of God. So, they cannot affect the final result. They only hope and wait for a perfect job to come.
But a perfect job doesn’t come by itself. You need to work hard to get it.
You need to prepare yourself and your CV. Perform your best during calls and at personal interviews. Complete the courses related to your job sphere and job search.
The person responsible for your success is you!
#2 Wrong Position Choice
It’s about self-restrictions. People often complicate simple things:
- Worked as a salesman in a small company — thinks that cannot work in the big one.
- Worked as a manager in the mall — thinks that cannot work as a manager in IT.
Your previous experience does not limit you, but on the contrary, increases your potential.
Define the position and field you want to work in, and don’t be afraid of new and lack of experience.
Only your desire and motivation matter. You can learn how to do a good job later, even after hiring.
#3 Fear of Big Money
Your salary expectation is the entry point for wages discussion. If you ask for $30k nobody will offer you $40k.
Don’t put 1 million in minimum wage requirements, stay adequate.
But if you want $50k feel free to ask for $55k. You may even get it!
#4 Agree to Everything
You have to have standards. You can’t agree to the first position you find.
You must clearly define the conditions of work, which you will not give up.
Do you want $50k, but received an offer only for $40k? Don’t worry and don’t accept it. Say — “Thank you, it doesn’t fit my requirement. Goodbye”
There are more jobs than seekers. You are in demand. So, use it to your advantage.
In the end, a job is a tool for making money, so pick a handy one. Unless you want to hate your job and never have enough motivation to grow there.
#5 Mumble in the Dark Corner
Only confident people win.
As a child, I knew how to play the guitar beautifully. I knew all the notes, but I sang softly. So, no one asked me to sing again.
There was a friend of mine, who knew only 3 chords, sang out of notes, but there were crowds of girls around him. He sang loudly and confidently, although he missed chords. I did everything right, but I mumbled.
Confidence — good, uncertainty — bad.
Everyone can mumble. Only a few can speak clearly, even if they are worried.
There is a trick to sound confident. You don’t really need more than to seem. Fake it till you make it.
Force your body to behave confidently. Let yourself tremble inside and want to cry. But you must speak and look confidently. Then, only over time, the brain will adjust to the body. Will get used to it.
#6 Neediness
Please don’t show it! Never!
There is no sense neither for you nor an employer in your neediness. Any partnership is better between equal partners. That’s how the market should work.
Remember. You are doing well, you are appreciated at work, you have money. You are just considering other options because you want to develop further.
No critical situation. Your cat is not dying, and you don’t need money right now for the surgery.
Even if it isn’t true. You have to position yourself in the right way from the very beginning.
#7 Ignoring Yourself
The worst thing you can do is ignore your strengths and weaknesses.
We are all different. We have different bodies, brains, education, and backgrounds. Position can be perfect for someone but doesn’t fit you.
First, you need to analyze yourself and figure out what you want and what interests you. Only then start searching for a job.
Everyone has talents. Makes sense to use them to your advantage.
If you speak well, emphasize this skill and don’t pay attention to your poor physical shape. For a salesman, it is more important to communicate with customers than to impress clients with biceps.
