7 Reasons to Support Working with Psychedelics as an Adjunct to Talk Therapy

So there are many reasons that a person may choose to work with diverse modalities in addition to talk therapy.
While talk therapy has long been the convention to find support for mental health struggles, particularly for people struggling with anxiety, depression, and other so-called mood disorders, research is re-emerging to support that working with natural allies (as well as synthetic ones like ketamine — under a doctor’s supervision and at sub-anesthetic levels, under the amount that Matthew Perry had consumed) can immensely augment the healing journey and alleviate issues such as acute depression, PTSD, inflammation, anxiety, alienation, addictions and more.
Psychedelics possess a unique ability to facilitate deep and transformative healing experiences that talk therapy alone may take years, if ever, to help support a person to experience a “breakthrough.” This is due to the impact of psychedelics and other entheogens (ie MDMA) on perception, consciousness, and the brain’s neural pathways.
Following are a few ways that psychedelics and entheogens can enable healing in ways talk therapy alone may be challenged to fully support:
1. Altered States of Consciousness:
- Psychedelics induce altered states of consciousness that enable individuals to access parts of their mind and memories that are normally hidden or represse from conscious access, even though these memories may often be stored romantically and mentally in ways in the body that they cause blockages and unhealthy behaviors due to living in a trauma-informed state.
- These altered states can provide a different perspective on one’s experiences and help uncover underlying issues that might be difficult to address through traditional talk therapy.
2. Heightened Emotional Awareness:
- Psychedelics can intensify emotions and sensations, making it easier for individuals to confront and process deep-seated emotions or traumas. This heightened emotional awareness can present a powerful opportunity for the individual to experience catharsis and emotional release.
3. Non-Linear Thinking:
- Psychedelics often lead to non-linear and creative thinking, allowing individuals to make connections between seemingly unrelated concepts or memories. This can help reveal the root causes of psychological challenges, enabling a more holistic understanding and resolution.
4. Access to the Subconscious:
- Psychedelics can help us to access the subconscious mind, where memories, beliefs, and experiences are stored. This access can unveil buried traumas, unresolved conflicts, and hidden memories and thought patterns that might not be readily accessible through talk therapy alone (or, if these memories may be available through talk therapy, their unveiling may be accelerated through the work of the medicines to help clear these suppressed memories, traumas, and emotions).
5. Ego Dissolution:
- Many psychedelic experiences involve a temporary dissolution of the ego or sense of self. This can allow individuals to detach from their usual narratives, defenses, and self-judgments. This shift can help to facilitate individuals deeply exploring their identity and understand their narratives in a detached, more conscious manner. Such a shift in perspective and the ability to reframe reality to grapple the larger picture can often lead to profound insights that might be difficult to achieve in traditional therapy alone.
6. Direct Experience of Healing:
- Psychedelics can provide individuals with a direct and profound sense of healing, transformation, and interconnectedness. Studies on people who have taken psilocybin have found that the substance can facilitate mystical experiences and help individuals for extended periods of time to face life with renewed hope, love, vitality, and compassion. The direct experience of healing has proven useful for people facing an array of difficult conditions, from PTSD (such as war veterans and people suffering from adverse childhood experiences (ACES)) to cancer to end-of-life anxiety.
- This firsthand mystical experience of healing can profoundly help individuals find healing and have renewed hope and appreciation for their daily lives.
7. Neuroplasticity:
- The so-called mystical experiences that psychedelics and entheogens facilitate have been scientifically shown to correlate to altered brain states that help promote neurogenesis. (Look up mental imaging of a person’s brain sober vs on psilocybin, and the imaging unequivocally shows how much more active the neural connections are in the brain is in its altered state.)
- Psychedelics have been shown to enhance neuroplasticity — the brain’s ability to reorganize and form new neural connections, even long after the actual journey or trip. The repairing and rewiring of the brain’s connections enabled by medicines like psilocybin to can facilitate a person overcoming negative thought patterns and behaviors. Such neurogenesis helps individuals to overcome entrenched issues, particularly destructive thought patterns and behaviors.
- The neuroplasticity and change in perspective can also help people overcome addictions and release thought patterns that are not serving them as the medicine can help individuals trust more in their higher power and release stagnant energies and overcome coping mechanisms.
It’s important to note that while psychedelics hold great potential for healing, they also come with risks and should be approached with caution and in a controlled environment. Integrating psychedelic experiences with talk therapy can be beneficial, as therapists can help individuals process and make sense of the insights gained during these experiences.
The synergy between psychedelics and talk therapy can provide a more holistic approach to healing, allowing individuals to address issues in their lives in a visceral and energetic way that can accelerate the benefits of talk therapy. Integration and support are important and psychedelics are not magic bullets but rather powerful tools that should be used with intention and with community and/or professional support.
