Why is Journaling Important for Self-improvement?
Reasons to keep a journal

Journaling can help you improve your life. Successful people keep a journal. Although I can't do things like stay in a fancy 5-star hotel in a different city every night or own a private jet to fly me to the most beautiful places, I can do some basic things successful people do — like regularly writing in a journal.
And that's a step in the right direction. I've kept a journal for years — long before I even knew what a journal really was for, or what the word successful meant. As a kid, I loved to write, so I got a notebook and wrote in it.
Keeping a journal is one of the most important things you can do for yourself — your present and your future self.
Here are 7 reasons you should start journaling today
1. Declutter and clear your mind
So much goes on in our minds every day. So many thoughts and ideas. And there are still so many ideas out there to take in. If you can tune in, there are always new downloads of brilliant ideas and information from the universe available to us.
If your mind is always full of thoughts, you don’t have space for new information to come in. You need to let some of those thoughts out on paper.
This makes you more focused, creative, and productive. Declutter your mind to make room for new ideas and information. Journaling is a great tool for coping with stress and anxiety.
Whether you are keeping a journal or writing as a meditation, it’s the same thing. What's important is you're having a relationship with your mind-Natalie Goldberg.
2. For future referencing
Successful people write their ideas down as soon as they have them — so they don't forget them. They understand how valuable those ideas are. Once you've gotten your idea down, you can move on to something else. The moment you get your ideas down, you know it's safe.
I write about what happened on specific days. Where I was. Who I was with. What I did. How I was feeling. When I write in my journal, I write assuming my kids and my grandkids will someday find and read it.
I make sure the things I write will make them smile. I leave notes for my daughter. I leave kind words for my family. I write how much they mean to me.
People who keep journals have life twice- Jessamyn West.

3. Record important details
When you write in your journal, those words are yours to keep forever. Record stories, relationships, friendships, family, and anything else that you find valuable.
Document the births and the deaths of loved ones. Document what you did on your 30th birthday so you don't forget it. Can you remember what you did on your 26th birthday?
It’s easy to forget important dates and times. Putting them in a journal keeps those records safe so you can refer to them at a later date.
Documenting little details of your everyday life becomes a celebration of who you are-Carolyn V Hamilton.
4. Keep track of your growth
Journaling is a great tool for documenting your growth, your life experiences, your failures, and your greatest accomplishments. Write about the beautiful days and the bad days.
Write about the arguments you had with your loved ones. Write about the things that made you happy and the things that made you sad. Later on, when you go back to read them, you can see where in your life you’ve grown and where to implement changes.
You review the past to assess the present and then determine what actions are necessary to change your future. You take what you know and apply it to how you want to grow. Thus, the power of journaling -Melissa Steginus.
5. A sacred place to be yourself without judgment
Sure. You have friends and loved ones you can share your thoughts and ideas with. But people judge. Your journal will never judge you. Your journal won't interrupt you or tell you how you are overreacting.
Journaling is a time where you can be vulnerable, release, and let go of your fears. It's a time to be free, to be yourself.
A personal journal is an ideal environment in which to become. It is a perfect place for you to think, feel, discover, expand, remember and dream-Brad Wilcox.
6. Leave notes for your future self
Who do you want to be 5 years from now? Leave messages for that version of you. Write your life experience so your future self can look for repeating patterns. How did your relationships start and end? Did you make rash decisions that ended badly? What are some of your negative habits?
Your future self — who is probably smarter than you are right now — will use the information in your journal to see where things could have been done differently.
Journaling is like whispering to one's self and listening at the same time- Mina Murray
7. Become a better writer
Journaling regularly may seem like such a small task, but it helps improve your writing. If you don’t know where to start, write the first thing that pops in your mind.
The more you write, the more you get better at it. To become a better writer, make writing a part of your daily routine. Just start writing.

If you don’t own a journal, go out and get you a fancy journal with stickers, it makes it more fun, or get a plain old notebook, it doesn't matter as long as you write.
