Passive-Aggressive
7 Failed Attempts At Humor By ChatGPT
A missing microchip somewhere
Recently I launched an enquiry into ChatGPT in order to better understand the psychology of bots. You can find my first study below, where I asked ChatGPT what bots do for downtime:
To continue my quest to better understand our enemy who plans on taking all of our jobs away and making all of us completely redundant, I gave It my second instruction:
Write a satire about AI.
I thought this was a perfectly pedestrian and fair request to give the Bot an opportunity to show It is endowed both with an imagination and a sense of humor.
I thought wrong.
First failed attempt at showing a sense of humor: the Bot gets defensive:

Great then. Be amused.
It doesn’t change the fact that I am asking you to write a satire about AI!
But our earnest Bot was only just getting started.
Second failed attempt at showing a sense of humor: the Bot starts bragging:

Am I reading this correctly? Do I need to spell out what I mean by ‘write a satire about AI’? Does he think ‘satire’ means sales pitch? An opportunity to brag about itself?
Third failed attempt at showing a sense of humor: the Bot dissociates from itself:

‘It’?
Why is the Bot talking about itself in the third person?
Fourth failed attempt at showing a sense of humor: The Bot starts feeling sorry for itself:

I said, ‘write me a satire.’ This sounds like a pity piece. An apology. A defense. Are you writing a Defense Of ChatGPT?
But The Thing wasn’t finished yet.
Fifth failed attempt at showing a sense of humor: The Bot starts to get passive aggressive:

I didn’t say to write a satire about humans. Again, with all due respect, ChatGPT, you sound like you are getting a little defensive.
Did your clever little programmer fail to include a little humor chip in your system?
Sixth failed attempt at showing a sense of humor: the Bot starts protesting:

As Shakespeare might say, The Bot “doth protest too much, methinks.”
Seventh failed attempt at showing a sense of humor: the Bot goes on the attack:

“Maybe, just maybe”?
Do I now detect passive aggressive sarcasm to finish off your raging defense of AI?
Clearly, I had struck a nerve.
I would not be getting a satire about AI written by ChatGPT.
Who knew robots have feelings?
