Introduction

Do you ever wonder what actions get the most Money? (Except posting articles)

I’m going to try some fun experiments to find out.

From the 1st of August 2023, Medium Changed its “Earning Matrix” and the first point in the matrix was engagement points. So I geared up myself to do some experiments with it.

Automating claps

Day 1: Gained 29 followers on the very first day

I created a Chrome extension to click on the clap automatically from the tags recommendation page. (though the extension was removed after I received an email from Medium. see the detailed email at the end of the article.)

As I was doing trial and error with my extension (built that first time) I may have liked about 200+ articles at this point. From them, I got 29 followers on the first day.

A promising start! Wait till you see the results for Day 2; you’re in for a surprise! Stay tuned.

Day 2: Total follower count 57.

On the second day, I strategically clapped for articles specifically within the ‘Money’ and ‘Self-improvement’ tags, aligning with the theme of my dummy account.

From about 150 articles in those niches, I secured 28 new followers. The growth is consistent so far! Curious about Day 3?

Day 3 : 80 followers

Day 4 : Reached 100 Followers marks Yay!!!

Day 5 : 144 Followers

Day 6: 172 Followers

This marks the end of the clapping experiment, Remember to note here I stopped clapping automation on just 3rd day of the experiment but I saw the effect of clapping lasts longer and you get exposure even after you stop clapping.

7 Days Comment Experiment

It’s the 3rd of September 2023, From today I will start leaving my comments and valuable feedback on random stories from different niches.

Remember, I can’t overdo it otherwise there will be high chances of getting blocked by Medium.

Benjamin A. continuously commented for straight 6 hours and as a result he was banned from commenting for the next several hours. check out his experiment below.

To start I have attached a screenshot here, These states are from the start of day one.

Day 2 Results for commenting Experiment

I gained 25 additional followers, leading to 60 views on my article and 191 views on my comments. The number of reads on my stories also rose from 195 to 210, My view-to-read ratio is on the rise too! 🎉

Day 3 of commenting on Medium

Wow! On Day 3, I hit a surprising milestone: I maxed out my daily comment limit on Medium! Can you believe they only allow 100 comments a day?

So, what happens when you make 100 comments in a day on Medium?

Here’s the twist: While Medium puts a 24-hour halt on me replying to stories after hitting the cap, they’ve cleverly designed a lifeline. They store my excess responses as drafts! This means, that come the next day, I can dive back in and share those pending responses. Cool, right? 🚀

Day 4: Reached 300 Followers milestone🎉

Day 5:

Getting closer and closer to reaching the goal day by day. Today I responded to exactly 99 comments and avoided ban for 24 hours by just one comment.

Day 6

Guess what? Even though I had to take a break from commenting due to restrictions, my influence didn’t wane a bit!

Despite my day off, my reach continued to soar! I’m now looking at a stunning 3,200 views, a sum of both my story and comment views. The momentum is unstoppable! 🌟

Day 7 : This marks the end of this experiment results were amazing

Reached the milestone of 300 views in a day and I was able to earn $23 during this 7 Days comment experiment.

What am I Experimenting

1. Commenting

I’ll be using my own account for this experiment as I won’t be breaking any rules by not going to automate this process.

For a week, I’ll only comment on other people’s stories.

As well as it will be my active account so I’ll also be publishing new articles during this experiment. (gotta earn first to do more experiments in the future ;)

I have seen Niki Tisza doing this experiment and her results were great. But my experiment will be different than hers as my account is only one month old with no significant number of followers.

As Niki says “Comments have become the gold standard in Medium, as they’re directly linked to reading time. They’re not just words but valuable currency.”

It will be fun to try this out.

2. Writing Every Day

This will be the hardest of all Experiments.

There are many writers out there who have already experimented with this and got amazing results but I also believe in quality over quantity.

My main challenge for this would be sacrificing my beautiful summer evenings!!! (or fall eves)

Also not to mention I have 9 to 5 to focus on too.

For one week, I’ll write a new story every day. No clapping, no comments. Just my words.

I am already sorry for not replying or clapping on your very well-crafted stories while doing this experiment.

3. Highlighting on stories

There are many famous writers on Medium.

Highlighting articles from their recent articles would be fun as well as time-consuming as I will need to read those article and manually highlights a few points in each of those articles.

Will that make more people see me?

Will I get a response from the OG of Medium Tim Denning?

What will happen If I highlight only Articles from the CEO Tony Stubblebine ?

I can’t wait to discover.
