6 Weird Drinking Laws Around The World Actually Exist
You will think twice before getting tipsy — anywhere.

Our world is full of strange, antiquated laws that are rarely ever enforced — but they still exist in law books.
For instance, in Paris, there was a law which made it illegal for women to wear trousers. In the U.K., it was unlawful for Members of Parliament to wear armor inside Parliament. However, the law was scrapped in 2012 and 800 other outdated laws.
But this is not why you came here! Well, given the alcohol’s inclination to make an individual act thoughtlessly strange, and dangerous when consumed a bit too liberally, it should be of no surprise that there are numerous laws in place around the world that exist to prevent uncontrollable acts.
Some of the laws connected with alcohol are dead serious — like the law of the drunk driving one, which exists almost everywhere in the world. The punishment for not abiding by it is in its severe form.
On the flip side, some drinking laws are just bizarre and absurd. Below are some of the world’s oddest and rather amusing alcohol drinking laws for your spirit of inquiry.
1. No More Than One Glass Of Wine For Married Woman
Bolivia is not behind in absurd drinking laws, and its approach to drinking is complicated.
So apparently, Bolivia still has a law in its books that forbids a married woman from having more than one glass of wine, whether in a bar or a restaurant.
Furthermore, it doesn’t end here; the husband is given the legal right to divorce his wife if he finds her intoxicated or drunk.
The people who legislated this law were rather sexist. However, on the opposite side in Pennsylvania, the husband is under the knife, where one must have written permission from his wife to buy alcoholic drinks. Interesting.
2. No Drinking Beer Or Any Alcoholic Drink While Standing
Texas, the second-biggest state in the United States Of America, have quite a few absurd laws and one of them is related to drinking alcoholic beverages.
This Lone Star State has a law that states that a person should not drink more than three sips while standing.
If a person is found in a state where the individual is drinking while standing, they will find themselves on the wrong side of the law, which usually involves hefty fines.
3. No Drinking While Watching A-Rated N-Movie
Idaho State has a law which is still being enforced. In 2000, Idaho passed a law prohibiting movie theatres from selling alcohol during movies that delineate sex.
This law is strict, and it is made to be followed. In 2015, two officers of the Idaho state police department went undercover.
They busted a theatre where alcoholic beverages were served to its VIP customers while watching Fifty Shades Of Gray.
Think twice the next time you want to have that cold beer while watching anything like Fifty Shades Of Gray or rated N. Beware.
4. No Alcohol For Anyone From Midnight Till Morning
Thailand is a place known for its epic nightlife, clubbing, and cuisine. So, I bet you didn’t see this one coming: you can’t buy anything alcoholic from midnight till 11 am and from 2 pm till 5 pm.
This blue law in Thailand prohibits stores and restaurants from selling any beverage containing alcohol, even on national holidays and those related to the king.
The authorities fully enforce the law, which can be seen in tourist-friendly areas of Thailand where these alcoholic beverages are sold in peculiar bottles, usually wrapped in paper or plastic bags.
5. Better Not Get Drunk, Not Even While You Are In A Pub
Pubs or clubs exist so we can drink somewhere less depressing than our own house without being judged by anyone! Typically, if one is headed to a place like these without any intention of being tipsy, well, they are either drivers by profession or just lost.
In the United Kingdom, it is illegal to be drunk in any public place, including pubs and clubs, under the U.K’s licensing act of 1872.
According to law, if you are found drunk anywhere that could be considered a public place, you are punishable by hefty fines.
6. Drinking Permit In The State Of Maharashtra, India
In India, laws related to alcohol are determined on a state to state basis, so it is the state who decides what age a person should be before one is allowed to drink.
In Maharashtra, however, the law states if a person wants to drink anything which contains alcohol, one needs an official permit.
What? Realize how much hassle you have to go through before having your favorite drink!
The crazy law dates back to 1949, where it further states that anyone who wants to possess or transport booze needs a license.
This law is still in effect, so anyone who doesn’t abide by it is jailed and heavily fined.
Final Words
Most of the laws mentioned in the list above are outdated, and legislators who made them back in the day must have had a reason to implement them. But I actually wonder about the logic behind restricting drinking of beer while standing!
