6 Things Both People Do When They Really Like Each Other

The best way to tell if it’s really working out is to see if your relationship is reciprocal.

When I was younger, I spent years agonizing over whether or not a guy was into me. If a boyfriend had stopped liking me or if that guy at the shop was just being polite.

Then I met my husband, and it all became clear.

I realized is that the telltale signs were right there in the things I was doing myself. When someone acts the way that you do when you like them, that means something is right.

So if you want to know if you should commit or if the person you’re with is committed, here are some things that you both might be doing if it’s right.

1. They call/text right back.

When I like someone, I text right back. When I met my husband, I couldn’t wait to respond. I wanted to let him know he was important and special, I never made him wait.

We’re still like that. We communicate during the day, every day, even 15 years later.

We check in regularly, even if it’s just to say hi and I love you.

Anyone who is into you will text you right back. Immediately or as soon as they are able.

2. They don’t nitpick.

When I like someone, I don’t want to make them feel bad. I find something nice to say instead of focussing on what bothers me. When you’re totally into someone, you don’t see those things, especially at first.

When someone is into you, they’re kind to you. They don’t pick fights, or criticize you just for sport; they’re not mean, they don’t try to embarrass you.

3. They pick up the slack.

When someone is into you, they want to help you. They try to make your life easier.

My husband carries things for me, he pops out to the store for me, he’ll go out of his way to get what I need. I do the same for him.

His happiness is important to me, and if he needs anything, I’m there for him.

If someone is into you, they will be there for you.

4. You both act like you’re into each other.

When you really like someone, you will act accordingly. It’s the same for them. Your body language will give it away.

Do you lean in, do you laugh easily, do you touch each other in an easy intimate way? You will act how you are feeling, your body can’t lie.

5. They want to help other people in your life.

When someone really likes you, they’re there for you, your friends, and your family.

When I first met my husband, he went to my sister’s apartment and hung pictures for her. He fixed every squeaky door in my parent’s house. He was as helpful to the people I cared about as he was to me.

When you care for someone you care about the people they care about, if they are acting the same, that probably means they are feeling the same.

6. You respect each other’s feelings about the people in your merged lives.

I know this is going to ruffle some feathers, but some friends don’t have a place when you’re in a couple.

When I first met my husband, he did some work on my computer and came across some weird porn a male friend had sent me. I had deleted it and forgotten about it.

When my husband found the pictures, he got really upset that this guy could have been so disrespectful to me.

Because of that I could never bring that friend forward into my relationship and I wasn’t going to fight about it, he was right, it was gross and stupid.

It was more important for my husband to be comfortable than to fight to have this guy be a part of my life. It was vital for me to respect how he felt about the situation.

When you’re really with “the one,” how they feel about the other people in your life matters. If the relationship is healthy, it’s not about wanting to control or eliminate support networks. There might be people who make your partner genuinely uncomfortable for real reasons.

After all these years, these signs are still important to me. They’re still relevant, and my husband and I both still expect the same level of consideration and commitment as the day we met.

Even though we’ve been married for 15 years, I can still use these markers as confirmation that he’s still 100% into me.

Every couple’s validations are a little different. But if you’re with the right person, your values and outlook will align, so what you put into your relationship will be what you get back.
