6 Practical Steps to Keep Cognitive Load in Balance and Under Control

A helpful guide for individual learners, parents, teachers, and employers based on my instructional design work

I wrote this article to spark ideas for lowering your cognitive load while learning individually and to aid parents in guiding their children. If you’re an educator, these principles can be handy in shaping young minds. For employers, they offer guidance for supporting your team’s learning. I see learning as a lifelong experience for everyone at any age.

However, learning creates significant stress in the brain and the nervous system, activating the HBA axis, known as cognitive load, which is the topic of this article. Cognitive load refers to the total amount of mental effort and resources the working memory uses to process information.

Unfortunately, working memory is a limited resource. Thus, it must be used carefully to keep mental stress in control and enjoy the learning process. I previously introduced 12 steps to improve working memory. However, we also need to understand the impact of long-term memory on managing cognitive load as it makes it easier. To this end, I introduced and explained the concept of procedural memory in a previous story.

The concept of cognitive load is used in cognitive psychology, education, cognitive science, information management, knowledge transfer, and instructional design to understand the limitations of our cognitive system and to design and implement instructional materials to optimize learning.

I think of cognitive load as the fuel for our brain’s engine, determining how efficiently we process and retain information. In cognitive psychology and education, understanding the nuances of cognitive load is pivotal for crafting instructional materials that optimize learning experiences.

Effectively managing our cognitive load is paramount for optimal learning and cognitive function. When cognitive load is too high, it can lead to cognitive overload, hindering the ability to comprehend and retain information. Excessive cognitive load can adversely impact the creativity and productivity of learners and also cause mental health issues.

Understanding The Importance of Three Types of Cognitive Loads

From my professional experience, using the well-established Cognitive Load Theory, I categorize cognitive load into three types to make it easy to understand. They are intrinsic, extraneous, and germane. Let me explain.

1 — Intrinsic Cognitive Load refers to how hard the material is to understand. Some topics or concepts are naturally more complex and require more mental and physical effort. Imagine learning to ride a bike for the first time. It’s inherently challenging because you’re figuring out how to balance, pedal, and steer simultaneously.

3 — Germane Cognitive Load is the mental effort you consciously put into learning and understanding, actively processing information to connect it with what you already know. For example, when studying history, actively trying to relate new information to what you already know about a specific period can increase your germane cognitive load.

In summary, intrinsic is about the inherent difficulty of the material, extraneous is about how it’s presented, and germane is the effort you consciously invest in understanding and integrating the information.

Why should we understand these loads?

By developing strategies to balance intrinsic, extraneous, and germane cognitive load, we can enhance our learning experience and lower stress.
